Herbert Purcell was killed last Sunday night near Rockport by William Shontee. The incident is reported as a fatal assault with investigations continuing into motive and possible charges.
In Rockport area four miles north of town Herbert Purcell aged about 21 was shot and killed by William Shantee after a confrontation outside the Grandison home on the Huffman farm. Shantee, arrested and later pleading guilty to murder in the second degree, alleged he acted believing Purcell would shoot him. Miss Lela Ben Berry of Owensboro Kentucky resigns from Rockport public schools after two years of service. Ill health forces her to resign, effective October 1. The school board accepts the resignation and the district regrets losing such an able instructor.

A major blaze in Gentryville began Monday morning at Alva Jones’s livery barn, destroying hay, wagons, harness, and the upper floor of the Odd Fellows hall. Miss Willie Ernestine Kasser aged twenty one died at her Louisville home after an operation. Her body was brought to this city and funeral services were held at the home of Isaac Peckinpaugh conducted by Rev. Edwin H Boldrey. Interment was in Sunset Hill cemetery. The Kasser family formerly lived here before moving to New Albany and later Louisville, with many friends extending sympathy.
Rockport defeated Owensboro 3 to 2 on the local diamond last Sunday in a thrilling game before about 500 fans. Tex Covington of the Detroit Tigers allowed only three scattered hits to secure the win for Rockport. Dick Grefe of the Central league will catch for Rockport as the team expects a large crowd for the next game in Owensboro.

The Rev H C Clippenger, now in Evansville for a Methodist conference, is invited by Rev Boldrey to speak at Rockport Methodist Church Sunday night Sept 20 at 7 15. Clippenger once led Rockport and later served as a pastor and presiding elder before heading to Indianapolis. W S Rudd was ill and moved to a sanitarium in Evansville for treatment.

John W F Kanzler son of Mr and Mrs P F Kanzler of this city died Wednesday Sept 21 in Indianapolis after a ten day illness from typhoid fever. He was a pharmacist with five years in Indianapolis. Burial is planned in Terre Haute where Mrs John Kanzler formerly resided. Surviving are his parents a wife and one sister Mrs Frank Brenner. Funeral travel arrangements were made by P Kanzler who left for Indiana.
William J. Bryan will speak in Owensville on Monday afternoon October 17 as Gibson County Democrats plan a grand entertainment for the Nebraskan. A platform is to be erected in the public square for his address and related events.
The body of Mrs. Wilfred Bennett of Grandview died in an Evansville sanitarium and was taken to Grandview for interment. She was 28, survived by a husband. The Chrisney fair runs this week with many Rockport residents attending. Ben J. Bockting of Mariah Hill joined the Nourse & Limberger insurance firm. WCTU Indies plan another rummage sale soon. Anna Miller has been ill but improving. Dr Shirley Langg returned from a business trip to Chicago.
