Busy recorder files oil and gas leases in Luce township

Recorder Vaal reports 181 leases recorded by John H. Galey of Pittsburg covering 17 518 acres in Grass Luce and Ohio townships from Bloomfield to Hatfield. Leases to Cyrus Underwood of Jamestown NY run five years and extend if oil and gas found. Lessees receive one eighth of oil produced plus annual gas and oil royalties. renewal requires drilling or payment per acre. R L Hancock of southern Kentucky also pursuing land and potential test wells nearby.

Deaf pupils sent to Indiana school for the deaf

Selby F and Daniel T Eberhart, aged 7 and 9, of Huff Township, will be placed in the Indiana State School for the Deaf in Indianapolis by County Attendance Officer G Deschler. They attended district school regularly despite being deaf and mute. Under the new compulsory education law all pupils of school age with defects in insight hearing or speech must be kept in a state institution for their education.

A total lunar eclipse will occur on September 15 visible across the United States. A partial solar eclipse follows on September 29 observable in this locality, marking two sun eclipses in one month between new moons.

Big Fire Destroys Troy Livery Barns

A large blaze in Troy consumed the livery barn of Hill & Mason and the feed barn of Masterson & Quinon early Wednesday. Eight horses perished in the Hill barn and a quantity of vehicles and feed stored there were lost. Origin of the fire is unknown.

Former Indiananian Caleb Osborn Dies in Zellwood Florida

Caleb Osborn a respected Zellwood resident died last Wednesday afternoon in Orlando. Funeral services were held August 28 at his son L. C. Osborn’s home conducted by Elder Kelly. He was born February 20 1837 in Indiana and married twice leaving several children including a son from the first marriage and six from the second. he served as a senior partner of the local general merchandise store and was a longtime Primitive Baptist church member. Surviving spouses and children reside in Zellwood Tampa Miami Dunellon Ocala Coronado Beach Apopka and Orange County Florida.

County Teachers Institute Opens September at Rockport

The County Teachers Institute will convene the week of September 29 in Rockport's courthouse. All county schools close for the week. Primary Methods will be taught by Miss Emma Colbert of the Teachers College Indianapolis. Domestic Arts and Science by Miss Mary Mathews of Purdue University. Educational Psychology by Dr. Stanly Krebs of Philadelphia. One half day will be in sections with all instructors teaching concurrently in the high school building. Additional sessions may be added.

Man Killed by Freight Train Near Tell City

William Southwood of Troy was fatally struck by a Southern freight last Saturday at eight on the Cannelton branch while walking home from Tell City. His body lay on a trestle a mile from Tell City with severe injuries, one leg found on the engine pilot at Lincoln City. Town rumor says he was intoxicated.

Woman's Club Opens Season With Federation Day Talk

The Woman's Club held its first meeting of the season Monday afternoon with president Mrs Laura Wilkinson presiding. Mrs Helen Baumgaertner led the Federation Day discussion, followed by a social hour with refreshments. Visitors included Mrs E E Wesseler of Cuba Mrs R G Hoagland of Boonville Mrs Edgar Traylor of Jasper and Mrs F J Reinhard of Indianapolis.

At a Tuesday afternoon meeting the ladies of the W C T U chose new officers for the coming year. Wheat Crop Tops All Time as U S Grain Reports Record

Government monthly grain report shows spring and winter wheat at 754 million bushels, beating 1901 record by 60 million. Corn crops suffer heat and drought with forecast 2.251 billion bushels. Hay and apples also down from last year.

New Button Factory to Open in Rockport

Ed Bressler and Stanley Murray are erecting a building near Vine Street in North Rockport for a new button factory set to begin in a few weeks. The plant will house up to forty machines, though initial operations may use fewer, and a large lot of shells has already been purchased for the venture. A spreading viper snake was killed by Ebert Hyatt on Thursday along the pavement beside J A Sargent's drug store.
