Mr and Mrs Guy H Walker hosted a dinner Monday evening at their Second Street home entertaining guests Misses Alice Mason Lucille Richards Josephine Kellams Mary Guard Kellams Dorothy Ehrman Mary Garrison Walker and Messrs Henry Karney and J Houston Walker in a lively social gathering hosted by the family.
Mr and Mrs Harry Rassmussen of Denver arrived Tuesday evening for a several day visit with Mr and Mrs Charles Salm. Mrs Rassmussen, before her marriage, was Miss Marie Cunningham, a frequent guest at the Salm home.
The body of John Jenkins, a Spencer County resident, killed in World War I, was laid to rest at Sunset Hill. The funeral follows a Whestary style service, honoring the fallen soldier and recognizing his heroism in battle.
Rockport honors Corporal John Oscar Jenkins the first Spencer county boy killed in World War I. His body arrived Friday, lay in state, and was escorted to Oakwood Cemetery after services at the Methodist church. The Jenkins Post American Legion led tributes with a firing squad and taps.
Max Bosler left last Friday for Louisville Kentucky where he will be connected with the Louisville Herald.
Miss Ida D. Armstrong returned Wednesday evening to Evansville after a day at her home here. Her brother Frank Armstrong remains critically ill at his Evansville residence with condition unchanged.
The Eastern Star auxiliary met Tuesday afternoon at Mrs. Andrew Kopp's home on Main Street. A vocal music program featured Mrs. Arnett Richards, Mrs. George Breitler, and Mrs. L. C. Smith, followed by amusing contests. An iced course was served. Assisting Kopp were Mrs. Charles Davis, Mrs. George Steitler, Mrs. Daniel Kopp, Mrs. S. Morgenthaler, and Mrs. William Wetzel. Out-of-town guests included Mrs. George Smith of Maryville Louisiana, Mrs. Robert Houghland of Boonville, and Mrs. Eutha Nutting of Mentor, Ohio.
The Catholic Church purchased a new bell to replace the damaged one after a lightning strike. The bell will ring at 6 a.m 6 p.m and noon, marking the hours once repairs are finished.
The marriage of Miss Hazel Williamson and Harlan F. Krueger occurred August 11. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. B. F. Williamson of Shiloh, and the groom works as a mechanic at Woods garage in the city.
The former Craig residence at Third and Elm streets is being torn down this week. R. W. Richards, who recently bought the property, plans to build a modern bungalow on the site this fall.
Fred Hackleman and Emily left by rail for Bedford after a visit with Dr. and Mrs. I. M. Hackleman. Their son Marian plans to stay until Sunday to drive the car back to Bedford.
A county meeting of the Ww. GT. U. will be held at the home of Mrs. C. A. Fay on Main street Thursday September 15 at 2 30 o clock. All members are requested to attend to elect new officers.
John Waninger and Thomas Friedel of New Boston, Joseph F. Vaal, John Daunhauer, and Paul Ringeman, Irwin Maninger, and Carl Gingelbach of Huff township were in the city on a business visit Wednesday.
Miss Kathryn Huff returns to Cincinnati with her parents Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Huff for the autumn term at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music after a summer vacation in this city.
John Zachritz installed lightning rods this week on St Bernard's Catholic Church in the city. The church shortly before had undergone repairs after a lightning strike earlier this month.
Misses Helen and Laura Martin returned from Indianapolis where they were guests of their sister Mrs George Schannessy.
Carl Vogel of Indianapolis and George Locker of Evansville attended funeral services for John Jenkins on Monday, with the Indianapolis and Evansville men among those paying respects.
Miss Mary Guard and Miss Josephine Kellams depart Sunday for Bloomington where Kellams will enter Indiana University.
William Jacobs and James Rim left Tuesday for Lafayette to resume their studies at Purdue University.
Dr. Raymond Besler of Indianapolis visits his parents Dr. and Mrs. H. F. Basler, staying with the Baslers during a hometown visit.
Court activity was light as Labor Day paused business. Commissioners accepted road and bridge work reports across Grass Carter Harrison and other townships. Several civil suits were listed, including a partition suit and a market for road contracts urged by the Indiana Sandard Gravel Producers Association.
