Mrs Malinda J Cockriel aged 78 died at her home in Gentryville on Monday of last week. She was the widow of Civil War veteran Stephen Cockriel and leaves a son Stephen J. Cockriel of Boonville and daughter Hannah Boyd of Gentryville with four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Surviving siblings include M F Oskins and D H Oskins and sisters Mrs A F Raborn and Mrs W M Smith. Funeral at M E church Wednesday at 9 30 a m. Interment Stark's cemetery.
Mrs Lena Roetzel Wier of Silver City New Mexico died Sunday morning after a lingering illness. Born November 17 1880 in Rockport Indiana she was a 1901 Rockport High School graduate. She met her husband L H Wier at Indiana University and is survived by her husband father Henry G Roetzel Boonville Indiana sisters Katherine Roetzel Mary Seiple brothers Henry C F Otto and Will Roetzel. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran church Friday at two o'clock with Rev Diehl officiating.
Postmaster Salm has substituted vehicle routes for motor routes to speed rural mail. Five rural routes are now in operation, replacing three. The change took effect November 16.

A fire at 2 a m Friday destroyed the smoking room and ten pin alley at St Meinrad Abbey. It is blamed on a defective flue though cause remains unknown. The blaze caused about 2000 dollars in damage with no other buildings harmed and no insurance. New goods in the alley were destroyed.
A Eureka school house burned Wednesday evening between six and seven o'clock. The brick building, described as the finest and best equipped in the county, was found to be ablaze inside. The fire was discovered with the interior fully in flames and is believed to have started in the basement from the furnace.
