Local board of commissioners met last Monday approving levee and bridge reports across Hammond, Lake Drain, Thurman, Huff, Luce, Ohio, Jackson and Grass townships. The company plans river shipping operations along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and will own the tug Dick C. Pape. This marks a move to expand inland waterway logistics with a new tugboat under their control.
The Rockport Navigation Company is incorporated under Indiana law with capital of 15000 dollars. Its purpose is to carry commerce and towing on the Ohio Mississippi and Missouri River systems with headquarters at Rockport. Directors are Charles Lieb Elmer C Artman and Arch Stevenson each holding fifty shares. They bought a steamer Dick C Pape a towboat for their own shipping and for towing others.
James L W Morris formerly of this county died suddenly at Jonesboro Arkansas on November 23 while in typical health. He served in the Civil War with company K 4th Indiana cavalry. His wife Sophronia Egnew Morris had died about five years earlier in Arkansas.
Rev. J. A. Diehl was formally installed as pastor of Trinity Lutheran church in Rockport by Rev. Carl G. Aue of Evansville. Aue preached from Second Timothy 4 2 and led the installation ceremony as a sizable St. Marks Evansville attendance joined for the service. Attending were Bedna Young John Young Mr Lutz Miss Leonard and Mrs C G Aue.
Miss Mary Jennings hosted a Friday night surprise party for her twenty first birthday with about twenty five guests. Pink and white carnations decorated the home and luncheon, and each guest received a carnation souvenir. An out of town guest, Miss Isavelle Killian of Owensboro, attended the event at the Misses Fuelster’s home.
Edwin Browne aged 22 of Saskatchewan to Florence Abbott 19 of Chrisney. William Irolland 88 to Parcilla Grimes 60 of Rockport, married December 4 by Rev. George W. Yeiser. Charles H. Quinn 21 to Mildred St. Clair 21 of Daviess County Kentucky, married December 2 by Esquire William Jones 1909. Cliff Mayo 23 to Anna Bacon 20 of Spencer County, married December 2 by Esquire Samuel I. Brown. Carl Head 21 to Margaret Davis, both Owensboro Kentucky, married December 2 by Esquire 5 I Brown.
Last Sunday the James C Veatch Post G A R elected officers including Commander B F Bridges and V C Holley Brown with J V C Mack Bayliss Q M H W McCoy Surgeon Dr J M Dailey and C Dr. J M Dailey. Installation set for Sunday the 19th.
The mean temperature for November was 51, the warmest in records dating back to 1871, with 76 degrees the high on the 6th and 26 degrees the low on the 24th. Precipitation reached 3.3 inches, the greatest November total since 1900, and the 24 hour high was 0.87 inches on the 21st. Wind averaged 11.8 mph from the south, with a max 40 mph on the 1st.
Road supervisors receive two dollars per day for up to sixty days yearly. They must file a sworn statement with the township trustee detailing days and roads worked. They cannot claim days equal to the number required of other district workers, and failure to perform duties incurs liability on their bonds.
Wm. G. Burford of Indianapolis secured the state printing contract for £910 1911 with an estimated annual total of $56,156 29 for the three principal classes and $9,904 43 for appellate court reports. The two year appropriation totals are $140,000 for the three classes and $20,000 for court reports.
Evansville speaker Rev J M Gniser will lecture at the court house Saturday evening December 18 at 7 o clock on The Man Behind the Gun. The talk, sponsored by the local G A R post, is free and described as worthwhile.
