Spencer Varrick Track Meet Postponed To Next Saturday

The Spencer Varrick high school track meet, originally set for last Saturday at the fair grounds, is postponed due to bad weather. Participants will come from Boonville Newburg Laganville Grandview Gentryville and Richland. Events include sprints hurdles mile and relays among others.

Theatrical Excursion to Majestic Theatre

An eighteen person excursion from Tockport to Cannelton visited the Majestic Theatre to see Supressed Desires and A Kiss in the Dark presented by Perry County talent under Mr Thos J de la Hunt. After the show a dance followed and the group returned home about 2 oclock.

Indiana University Adopts War Prep and Farm Duty Plan

More than four hundred IU students attend two hour weekly midship drill supervised by Captain Campbell Kine U S A. Three hundred rookies rise at 5 30 am for 6 15 drills as part of a voluntary preparedness program. Coeds join Red Cross first aid training with 250 girls, while 200 farmer sons withdraw to farm. University also votes to grant credit to students who return home to farm, mirroring national trends as wartime rules reshape campus life. Mr and Mrs W F Adams visited daughter Helen in Bloomington. Hog Jim Sells 830 Pound Poland China Hog Near Rockport

James EH Parker living five miles west of Rockport sold last Monday to John Kinney a hog weighing 830 pounds for 100 dollars. The pig will be butchered into lard and ribs in Rockport. Parker also sold 32 other hogs for 850 dollars. The big hog was three years old and Poland China. Neighbors call Parker Hog Jim for his knack of growing big hogs.

Commissioners Court Set To Meet In Regular Session

The commissioners court will convene in regular session next Monday to discuss agenda items and approve routine business. A vote on local matters and updates from departments are expected, with public commentary to follow.

Rockport Welcomes New Button Factory by Raleigh Scherzinger

Raleigh Scherzinger has bought six button cutting machines and will open a new factory in Rockport. Machinery is in the Maas building at Washington street and Lincoln avenue and the plant should start this week. About ten men will be employed, with production of mother of pearl buttons shipped to finishing plants. Rockport already hosts five button factories with Conner the largest in Indiana, plus others in Shos, Leavenworth, and smaller shops in nearby towns.

Roberts Named For Naval Academy Scholarship

Ralph Roberts son of Judge and Mrs R E Roberts is recommended by Congressman Denton for a Naval Academy scholarship at Annapolis. He must take the standard examination June 27. An extra appointment is added to the two regular cadets from the first congressional district due to wartime needs. Three alternates will be selected by Rep Benton from many applicants. Roberts is finishing his schooling at Gleamington and will go to Annapolis on instruction.

Man Bound Over in Hancock County Shooting Case

In Hancock County Kentucky on Monday morning Mien Dowell was bound over in Mevor Traempy's court on a 500 bond for shooting John Powers on the riverfront Saturday night. A 32 caliber revolver was found at the scene and Powers, wounded in the groin, later died in Owensboro hospital after thirteen intestinal perforations.

REASIN ANDERSON DIES IN COUNTY COMMUNITY

Reasin Anderson died Monday evening at his son Oscar Andersons home southwest of Rockport. He was 60 years, 9 months and 10 days old. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p m in Wak Grove church under the masons and burial followed in the cemetery. He is survived by his widow four sons and three daughters.

Savageland: Local Mt. Vernon troupe stages benefit show

An appreciative audience filled the auditorium Monday night for the musical comedy Savageland produced here for the benefit of St. Bernard's church by Mt. Vernon dramatic talent. The amateur performance drew Poesy county attendees who arrived in automobiles and paraded the streets as an advertising stunt.

Grandview High School Teacher Miss Nettie Stevenson Dies

Miss Nettie Stevenson, popular Grandview high school teacher, died at noon Friday after a week long illness. Her body was taken to Bedford for burial at her home community.

Spencer County Conscription Board Names Precinct Officers

The Spencer County Conscription Board met in Rockport on May 1 1917 and appointed precinct officers for each township. Members include John Chewning and Lewis Woolfolk who organized the board and reported to Adjutant General Harry B. Smith in Indianapolis.

Kirk Is Elected Superintendent Of Reekwort Schools

James W. Kirk has been elected superintendent for the coming school year and has served as principal of the high school the past year. Edward J. Krueger, 52, dies at his home near the fairgrounds after eleven weeks of cancer. Burial planned at Shiloh cemetery. funeral date not yet fixed.

Efficiency meeting schedule announced for Newtonville and Highland churches

An efficiency meeting is set for May 10 at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. at Newtonville M E church and Highland. On May 11 at 2:00 and 7:30 p.m. the event moves to Teen Chapel and Turners Chapel. Speakers include Rev. J W Eller Tell City Rev Edwin Shake Cannelton and Rev Roy Jack Rome.

Beets Board Elects Attendance Officer at Regular Meeting

The board of Education met at the county superintendent Strassell's office last Monday. Subjects discussed included the county commencement set for August. Daniel Walters of Jackson township was elected attendance officer replacing Charles G. Deschler after years in that role.

Drafting wealth as war sacrifice proposed by Bryan’s Commoner

Mr. HH L Berry of Stanton North Dakota argues that money should be drafted as war cost, not just men, challenging the idea that property owners should be spared. He asks if money is not as precious as blood and suggests equal sacrifice to prevent wealth profiting from army contracts.

Five act drama The Scottish Chief portrays the MacGregor Campbell feud set around 1600. Performance runs May 13 20 and 27 with augmented orchestra and music from Balfe Rossini and other classics.
