Our Indianapolis correspondent reports the Columbia Club extends honorary memberships as a gesture at a society gathering. Latch String voices out for the event as editors mark a notable club development.
Opened at the Columbia Club in Indianapolis with Republican editors as guests. President Hamilton pledged hospitality and temperance tie ins, while promotion of a statewide club network aims to boost GOP influence and business interests through a revival of the columbia club and its blind tiger.
The ladies musical club held an open meeting at the Presbyterian church last Friday evening with two guests per member. Mrs Fred Walker gave the welcome, featuring organ solos, vocal duets by Estella Haines and Esther Walker, vocal solo by Pauline Mayhall, violin solo by Esther Brown, and a reading by C D Ehrman. The second part included old hymns sung by club members and a paper read by Mrs F M Hackleman.
The 1915 calendar places major holidays on Sundays with Easter on April 4. Palm Sunday falls March 28, Decoration Day May 30, and the Fourth of July on a Sunday. Also noted are Saint Valentine’s Day February 14 and the spring season starting March 21. The obituary notes Abraham Hornback, 41, of Evansville, died of typhoid fever. he will be buried in Hatfield. He leaves a wife and six children.
Rev Thomas Dodd and Miss Marie Lamar of Clay township were married near Little Pigeon at Newtonville with Rev R A Stevens officiating. The couple, well regarded locally, are wished a long and happy life together by many friends. A funeral from Owensboro for Mrs Elizabeth Tucker, 76, longtime city resident, was held at Sunset Hill Cemetery after a boat transport.
Moravia Ashby sues Dora Y. Richardson and others for partition of real estate. E. L. Boyd acts as attorney for the plaintiff.
The Spencer county court house project draws strong support for a larger, fireproof building with more rooms for officials and juries. Chrisney residents push to move the county seat, while other towns consider similar measures. Petitions require 40 percent signatures and bond costs tied to an election.
Evansville store Strouse & Bros. prepares a comprehensive Style Show Week from March 14 to 19. The long established clothiers, in business since 1867 at Second & Main, showcase spring and summer menswear and boyswear, with a 47 year advertising record backing service and merchandise.
The Rockport Schools failed to secure the Indiana Art Exhibit for this year due to a single open date being spoken for before word reached managers. They hope to host the exhibit next year while noting an epidemic of measles is spreading through grades. Miss White's afternoon beginner class suffers most as the high school piano was tuned Saturday. The board of education adds to the library with an encyclopedia and ten volumes on vocations to guide vocational choices.
Pauline Mayhall and Arnett Richards were married last Tuesday at seven in Trinity Lutheran parsonage with Rev. J H Diehl officiating. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mayhall, is known for her soprano voice and studied voice in Tuscaloosa Alabama and Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R W Richards of the city. They will reside at the Richards home on Eighth street.
Dr. G. J. Smith of this city becomes a member of the Indiana Dental Study Club. The twelve member group draws from the region and central states. Evansville hosts a March 8 to 13 meeting with Dr. C. E. Woodbury of Iowa as demonstrator and teacher.
Miss Cora Garrett of this city won the gold medal in the Hatfield contest held last Sunday afternoon. Judges included Mrs. Lottie Vanada of Newburg Rev Huson of Indiana polis and Prof J B Johnson of Richland City. A lively interest was shown throughout the event.
John Russell, 44, a tenant near Rock Hill, was crushed and killed when his wagon was struck by a traction car on Sycamore street after leaving the Ray warehouse. The wagon demolished, horse injured and later euthanized. Russell leaves a wife and two children. funeral held at Oak Grove.
Miss Lula Miller died Friday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Phillips in Jackson township. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 oclock from the residence of Wm. Brother in North Fifth street, Rev. J. J. Robinette officiating. Interment followed at Sunset Hill cemetery. Surviving: two sisters Mrs. Wm. Brother and Miss Anna Miller, a brother Fd. Miller of California, and a half brother Chris Miller of this city. Miss Miller was a devout Methodist. The Ohio river freight business shifts noted with the steamer Tarascon entering Louisville Evansville trade, its initial trip made Monday, succeeding the steamer Loucinda.
The Woman's club schedules a meeting next Friday March 12 in the domestic science room. The work of the girls of the state will be an exhibition at this meeting and after the event articles will be returned by the committee to Indianapolis.
Prof Llewelyn of Mt Vernon will lecture to men only at the Methodist church next Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The lecture is under the auspices of the Nae Brotherhood society of the church. All men are invited to attend.
The Owensboro Messenger reports efforts to establish a Republican semiweekly in the city. Frank B. Posey is urged to serve as editor if created, and discussions involve moving equipment from Rockport. No consensus on location or timing is given.
S. S. Haafft of Grass township was driving north of Lincoln avenue toward the tile factory last Friday afternoon when his horse bolted. The buggy overturned and Haafft toppled to the ground, suffering minor bruises. The horse broke loose and ran before being slowed, Haafft later rode the horse home after saddling it again.
Allen Frields aged twenty residing on North Lincoln Avenue died Monday morning from tuberculosis. He was taken to the Newburg Tiberment.
