Christian J. Biedenkopf of Grand View files for divorce from Bertha R. Biedenkopf. They married October 10, 1902, separated July 26, 1916, alleging cruel and inhuman treatment including fighting and striking, and neglect of home duties. He seeks dissolution of the marriage.
Allen J Payton a Rockport lawyer and banker with wide Spencer county business interests died in an Evansville sanitarium after a recent operation. He was 55 years old and survived by his wife and five children. Funeral plans pending with services at his Walnut street home followed by Sunset Hill interment. He chaired First National Bank of Rockport and owned extensive Luce township farmland. The community mourns the loss of a respected public figure.
Mrs. Lanie Montgomery widow of Wayne Montgomery Sr died at her Eureka area home from a sudden apoplexy at 8:30 p m on Wednesday. Born September 1 1862 she was 54. She was daughter of Johnson Taylor and married twice first to Hickerson with one child Helen and later to Montgomery with son Robert. Funeral in Eureka Baptist church at 10:30 Saturday with Rev J N Daniel officiating. interment at Shiloh Cemetery.
James Plew drove a Metz auto off the north end bank of Lake Drain bridge last Friday. He escaped with minor bruises and scratches while the steering apparatus sustained slight damage. The narrow approach is flagged as dangerous and may lead to a fatal accident and possible county damages. Immediate safety improvements are urged.
The Ohio River surges from Cairo to its confluence, rising to half full banks and threatening structures. A sheet iron storehouse under the river bank at the lower landing fills with water and sustains heavy damage.
A rush for marriage licenses at the clerk’s office through February 24 shows 73 licenses issued. Most couples are farmers from Kentucky and southern Indiana, with 39 from Kentucky and many from Spencer county. Frank Hart through attorney E L Boyd files suit against Adam Stansbury and others to quiet title to real estate in Hammond Township. Hart contends defendants claim adverse rights clouding his title, with possession and ownership by plaintiff and grantors for over twenty years, seeking a judgment to forever quiet the title.
John Phillips of Troy says he was robbed of about fifty dollars while en route from Evansville. A friend in Evansville paid his Rockport fare home after a local driver helped him finish the trip.
