Gov. Ralston leads Indiana Commission members and associates to Frisco arriving ahead of Governor's Day as the state delegation travels for the exposition events and ceremonies.
Governor Ralston and secretary B B Johnson head a Indiana party leaving Indianapolis by Big Four to Chicago Kansas City and Denver, with Indiana made autos along the route, to attend the San Francisco Panama Exposition and observe Governor's Day on June 26. The trip includes Grand Canyon Manitou Springs Garden of the Gods and a end at San Francisco with plans to return by early August or sail east afterward.
The Abangarey sails on July 7 for Panama with calls at Havana July 9 and 10 Colon July 14 and 15 Bocas del Toro July 16 and 17 Havana July 20 and New Orleans July 22 The travelers plan a short stay in New Orleans and a brief stop in St Louis before returning home the first of August or a few days earlier.
County Auditor John T. Stevenson has apportionment figures for May taxes to townships and towns. Totals include Luce township $9,920.22, Ohio $9,830.15, Hammond $4,448.81, Huff $32,683.16, Harrison $2,353.49, Carter $3,305.78, Jackson $1,915.90, Grass $4,879.94, Clay $3,083.30, Rockport $4,888.11, Grand View $1,620.91, St Meinrad $116.58, Dale $1,584.31, Gentryville $252.70, Chrisney $1,791.80, Rockport civil town $4,080.52, Grand View $1,075.87, St Meinrad $183.07, Dale $967.38, Gentryville $331.49, State $16,526.14.
The USDA egg and poultry packing and demonstration car will tour towns on June 10 to 19. Dale June 10, Lincoln City June 11, Lamar June 12, Cheney June 11, Rockport June 18, Gentryville June 19. Hours run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each stop features demonstrations and packing guidance.
Fredrick M. Hodge of Evansville and Hazel McAdams daughter of Joseph McAdams were married at Trinity Lutheran parsonage last Saturday afternoon. Rev J H Diehl officiated. Miss McAdams has lived with relatives in Evansville and finished a stenotype course in an Evansville business college. she graduated Rockport High School in 1914.
Mr and Mrs Allen Sargent hosted a dinner party at their Second street home last Sunday with about twenty guests. The guests included Mr Sargent and family Mrs Emily Frank and daughter Ada Mrs Valetta Haines and daughters Ethel and Estella Mr and Mrs Fred Frank and two children Mr and Mrs Lawrence Shrede and son Myler Mrs Louisa Sargent and Mrs Marietta Brown.
Squire Robert R. Snyder officiated Tuesday morning for two marriages. Clarence McFal and Nellie Bates of Luce township wed at the clerk's office, and H E Beard wed Ethel Harrington of Daviess County Kentucky at Snyder's office, with the groom’s brother and his wife as escorts.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Burris hosted a dinner party at their country home last Sunday for guests including Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Laird, Mr. and Mrs. James Laird, Louis Schoenfeld and family, Mrs. Ernest Fee of Albuquerque, Dr. and Mrs. George Laird and two children, and Miss Tizzie Laird of New York City.
Misses Lenora Kirchgessner Marie Riegel Ruth Gager Anna Fisher and Charles Kerstiens received common school diplomas at the parochial school ceremony. Rev F E Schaub presented the diplomas at the schoolhouse last Sunday night.
The Rockport Booster club prepares a Monday Fourth of July celebration at the fair ground with morning ceremonies and a fireworks display. Activities include band concerts a basket dinner motorcycle and bicycle races boy scout grills and athletic events such as running jumps and throws. The grounds offer shade water seats and a pleasant setting for a day of festivities.
Miss Olive Jacobs aged 14 daughter of J. T. Jacobs of Evansville died at home after a long illness. Relatives accompanied the body to this city and funeral services were held at 3 p m at the M E church conducted by Rev J J Robinette. Interment followed at Sunset Hill cemetery. She is survived by her father a brother Oden and a sister Irene. She was known for a bright cheerful disposition and many friends here regret her early passing.
Joe Kennedy a painter from Owensboro Ky and Miss Clara Mattingly of Owensboro tied vows Tuesday night with Squire Snyder officiating. The couple arrived on the first Owensboro to Rockport boat and obtained a marriage license after Clerk Woolfolk returned home. They left for Owensboro by car to the ferry following the ceremony.
Attorneys E L Boyd Ek M Swan and W C Mason plus Arch Stevenson were in Boonville early this week for the trial of John Park against the Evansville and Eastern railway company. The first three represented the plaintiff while Mr Stevenson appeared for the railway company.
Mr and Mrs Herb Weil and their daughter Joan arrived in New York last Sunday aboard the St Paul from London England They plan a week long stay with Mr Weil s family before returning home
Members of the Eastern Star auxiliary were hosted by Mrs. B F Huffman at her Kennedy home on the lawn with cut flowers. Assistants included Mrs. Augusta Jacobs and Misses Ada Frank Jessie Harrison Ethel and Estella Haines. Guests included Mrs. Elizabeth Kidd of Memphis Tenn Miss Berry Morgan of Winslow Ark and Mrs R C Hartman and Miss Mollie Fuelster from the city.
The school board is transferring apparatus from manual training and domestic science to the Washington school building. Manual training will occupy first floor rooms, domestic science second floor rooms. Grades one through six move to the Seminary, grades seven and eight to the high school third floor.
A Sunday gathering at Mr and Mrs George Garrett’s home celebrated three birthdays including Mr Garrett Mrs Garrett and little Miss Muriel Tullis. About thirty guests attended among them Joe Richey Richard Garrett Everet Brand Will Tullis Kate Brand Blanche Whitehouse and others. A fine dinner was served and the day was described as most enjoyable.
Amanda Tretter sues John Tretter for support after separation on June 8 1915 from their home near Chrisney. She alleges marriage in November 1912 and that he has not provided support since leaving the home. She seeks judgment and twenty dollars monthly maintenance.
Former Terre Haute high school principal Charles L Pulliam was named Vigo County circuit judge by Governor Ralston after Rockville court voided Eli Redman’s election. The appointment followed the legal ruling declaring the prior election invalid.
City advance agent A. O. Powers visited last Monday to arrange the first visit of a new Rice & Dove water carnival show, aiming for a July appearance possibly on the Fourth.
A group gathering of Methodist pastors and laymen from Rockport Rockport circuit Chrisney Grandview and Yankee Town will convene at the M E church Friday afternoon at 8 o clock to organize the Methodist Forward movement within the group.
Evansville architect Clifford Shapbell visited Friday at the invitation of the city school board for a consultation on repairs to multiple school buildings.
Rev. John M. Daniels returned to Troy last Monday evening after concluding a week's meeting held at the same locale. The pastor led services throughout the period, delivering sermons and conducting daily sessions for the community.
Wm J Bryan says neutral nations crave end to war and that the United States will soon be in position to reap blessings through mediation. He calls for an international conference on postwar rules and urges peace as the normal condition while noting neutrals need protection from belligerents. He argues the United States must lead by example in patience and restraint. Also: farmer Peter Riegel suffers serious injuries after a hay wagon accident west of the city with painful, critical condition.
Mrs Horace Green and two daughters Miss Ehrma and Miss Marjorie arrived Monday night from Greencastle where the Misses Green have been students at De Pauw University. Ehrma graduated last week. They will visit with Mr and Mrs J C Basye before returning to Hammond Louisiana.
A Golden Girl and barge ferried large groups of excursionists from Owensboro to the city Friday evening arriving about six. A second boat arrived Saturday afternoon causing a rush during the week from that city.
Manuel Coomes of Evansville and Otie Baugh of Owensboro Kentucky were married at A Stevens office on Monday. Squire Robert R Snyder officiated the ceremony. Miss Mary Jane Murphy of Owensboro accompanied the couple.
Doctors O. Baumgartner and H. G. Weiss testified in the Boonville Park damage suit last Monday. They traveled in the letters car and were accompanied by others as witnesses.
Appraisers appointed to value the river land of Allen Gentry five miles south of Rockport toured the site today. They were accompanied by M W Mangus of Indianapolis deputy United States attorney for the Indiana district to assess condemnation value for the dam project.
Oil teams begin annual street treatment this week with Main street work starting Wednesday morning. Crews plan daily applications until completion, hampered by a misdelivered shipment bound for Rockport that was sent to Rockford, Indiana.
Fifty years ago next Sunday, June 20, mem o William T. Bullock of the 25th Indiana recalls great rejoicing in Sherman's army as orders spread that all units would move home. The troops were around Jonesboro and Raleigh in North Carolina before marching to Indianapolis.
Rev. and Mrs. J. H. Diehl with Harold will depart next Monday to visit relatives in Perkasie and Kintnersville Pennsylvania. On the way they will stop in Cleveland and Niagara Falls and expect to be gone about a month.
Miss Alma Swan arrives home Monday night from Battle Creek Michigan for a ten day stay with her parents Mr and Mrs E M Swan before resuming studies for the summer term at school.
Mr and Mrs T W Savage and their three children returned Friday from a week with relatives in Galatia Illinois. Savage reports a terrific hail storm in that area just before their visit.
The Homer Smith steamed from Grandview and points to Evansville last Sunday. About one hundred travelers from Grandview joined the trip and at Owensboro around four hundred boarded.
Grandview woman Mrs. Grandview Alice Rodenburg joined in marriage with Louis A. James, a Warren County farmer, by Squire Robert R. Snyder in his office last Saturday afternoon. It was the second marriage for both bride and groom.
A group of boy scouts, led by scout master John A. Bays, invaded Owensboro Kentucky on Tuesday. They crossed the river here and continued the trip on the Kentucky side of the river.
