Matthew Hirsch Sr. Dies at 72 After Sudden Illness
Matthew Hirsch Sr., 72, died suddenly at his Rockport home last Friday morning from heart trouble. He had gone to work earlier in apparent health and returned home. Funeral at St Bernard's Catholic Church followed by Catholic cemetery interment. Born July 9, 1840 in Heilign Stein Bavaria, he immigrated with his family in 1849, settled in Evansville, and moved to Rockport in 1863 to enter carriage manufacturing with S. W. Stocking Sr. He later built the Excelsior carriage works on Elm near Fifth, retiring about twenty years ago. He served as town councilman and participated in the Civil War Home Guards. He married Martha Limberger in 1867. survived by five children J. Benjamin, Henry, Silas F., Miss Gertrude, and Matthew F.

Soldiers Hold Annual Reunion in Grandview Chautauqua
The Spencer county soldiers reunion was held at Grandview Chautauqua on Wednesday. Attendance was lower than previous years. The G.A.R. post from the city traveled to Grandview and was welcomed by soldiers from across the county. Rev. Jacob E. Meeker spoke at ten, Major Mattison of Evansville gave the main address on Prison Life and Escape, with General Fisher from the Boer War also addressing the afternoon. Music by the Lewisport band accompanied a noon dinner. Ninety-five soldiers were enrolled, with names listed by regiment and company, including many Indiana units such as 42nd, 136th, 58th, 25th, 10th Cavalry, and others, plus veterans from Kentucky and Mexican War veterans noted.

Rockport and Owensboro opened a five game baseball set at the local ball park.
