Mystery Bill Would Swap Bonds for Foreign Liabilities

Washington July 12 a Treasury swap bill would extend war loan payments and allow exchanging good US bonds for German Austrian and Turkish bonds held by foreign governments. Senator McKellar warns it aids repudiation while Smoot questions scope and motives. A peace resolution aims to end the war but leaves troops and treaties unsettled.

Borah plan drives Senate action on disarmament

Democratic spokesmen and press push the Borah three nation plan for disarmament with White House hints of approval. The Senate passes the Borah resolution after Harding signals support to Poindexter while the Porter substitute for a national conference advances in the House. The President then tells Mondell it matters little how the resolution is worded, so long as it becomes a moral certainty the House will pass. The bill then returns to the Senate with the Naval measure.

Dedication of Spencer County Courthouse Planned

The Spencer county courthouse will hold a Thursday dedication with all day services in the assembly room. The schedule includes morning afternoon and evening programs with speeches from judges and contractors and music by an orchestra.

Obrecht and Miss Puckette Wed in Kentucky

Stanley Obrecht and Miss Virginia Puckette of Hawssville Ky were married in July and began a motor tour through Kentucky and southern Indiana before arriving in this city. They will reside here with Mr Obrecht joining Spain Motor Company.

Mule Distillery Raided in Huff Township

Sheriff Hargis and prohibition officials raid a Huff Township site last Thursday seizing a still allegedly run by Cassidy. Cassidy and Tom Friedel were arrested and brought before a judge for liquor law violations. Cassidy jailed. mash and quantity of liquor seized.

Relic Room Display Honors Civil War Sword Canteen

A relic from 1862 to 1865, a sword and canteen used by Frank H. Hurst of Hammond township, is presented in the county courthouse relic room by his daughters Laura, Mary, and Emma Raaf.

Rockport Fire Destroys Elite Cleaning Shop and Damages Bell Office

A Friday morning blaze in Rockport destroyed the Elite cleaning and pressing shop and damaged Indiana Bell Telephone offices. The fire started when a generator exploded on a steam press. Losses reach 1800 to 2000 dollars with 1200 insured. telephone damage about 800 dollars. Elite owner D Evans plans to open another cleaning establishment, while staff and residents were briefly relocated for safety.

Hoosiers defeat Tell City in ten innings at Rockport grounds

Baseball note from Rockport reports the Hoosiers beat Tell City 4 to 2 in ten innings after Tell City scored twice in the first inning. Waters will pitch for the Hoosiers next Sunday in a double header against the Elite and Owensboro, with Ling’s team preparing to counter.

Fire Destroys Rockport Milling Mill Complex

Fire last Saturday morning destroyed the saw mill and dry house of the Rockport Planing Mill. Losses include buildings machinery and lumber totaling 6000 with 2000 insurance. Cause unknown though suspected sparks in sawdust from Friday night. Flames were burning fiercely when found.

A group of ex service members from Buffaloville Gentryville Mariah Hill Selvin and Dale met at R P Hail in Dale Saturday evening and organized the Cooper Post of the American Legion electing temporary officers. Rockport currently hosts the only other post in the unit.

The Spencer County Sunday School picnic will be held at Lincoln Park on Thursday July 21. A Rockport train departs 9 a.m. with all stops. return leaves Lincoln City at 4 30 p.m. Dearing of Oakland City College will speak. Henry Schweinfurth Dies in Colorado Camp

Henry Schweinfurth aged about 25 died in a tuberculosis camp near Pueblo Colorado. He left Rockport last November seeking relief, worked in Pueblo then joined Woodmen Camp at Woodman for treatment. His body will be brought home for burial expected Saturday or Sunday. He is survived by his mother in Rockport and a brother, Rev Fred Schweinfurth of Louisville Kentucky.

California and Oregon Visit By Giles and Stonecipher

Giles and Stonecipher of Midway traveled Wednesday on business after spending the past year in California and Oregon visiting their sons and daughter Dr. Mary Giles of Portland. They returned to their Midway home in February.
