Law from the last legislature allows fifth-class cities to establish public playgrounds for children during vacations. School boards may use school buildings, lease or purchase grounds, condemn land, and levy a two cent tax per hundred dollars for funding. Boards govern playgrounds, enforce rules, and may appoint directors with police powers, paid from school revenues.
The First District Rural Carriers convention gathered at the Federal building in Evansville last Sunday. Officers were elected and committees named to organize the national convention set for September 16 to 19 in Evansville. Attending carriers included Henry Vawter Allen V Atkinson and Ed Kreuger with Vawter on arrangement and editorial, Atkinson on entertainment and Niles on reception. Afternoon speeches outlined plans for the national event.
The Grandview Chautauqua committee presents an unusually strong program featuring Rev. George E. Gowdy Hawkey Glee Club Dr Gabriel Maguire Chicago Male Quartette Robert Parker Miles Schildkret's Hungarian Orchestra Mrs J Redding Cole the German the Wizard Howard Plattenburg Titus Grand Opera Company Lula Tyler Gates The Seminary Girls and Hon Richard Yates in this year’s event.
Albert M. Bayliss aged 68 died at his home after a long illness during which he was paralyzed. He leaves a wife and six children. Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at United Brothers church, conducted by Rev. S. L. Todd and Rev. J. L. Brandenburg, with interment in Sunset Hill cemetery. The James C. Veatch GAR post, of which he was a member, assisted at the service.

A letter from John T. Kicby in Chanute Kansas dated July 3 1913 asks to send one year of The Rockport Democrat to Mt. Vernon South Dakota. He states he will move July 6 and requests future receipts and delivery to Mt. Vernon.
A city union meeting opening service drew a large crowd on the bluff last Sunday night. The sermon was delivered by Rev. J. H. Diehl. Next Sunday night Rev. E. H. Boldery will preach the sermon.
Rev. Albert Halliwell assumes duties as the new pastor of the Baptist church arriving Tuesday. He will preach at the Baptist church next Sunday morning and night and serve Grand View and Eureka Baptist churches, occupying their pulpits monthly.
Judge Roscoe Kiper and Henry F. Fulling of Boonville announce a new law partnership with offices in the Armstrong building on the north side of the courthouse square Boonville.
The Democrat notes a 1500 strong Independence Day gathering at George Bays home in Hammond township with speeches by John M. Woodward and Judge Lockhard, patriotic songs, and a rain interfere. It mentions grass crop yields, Rockport health, and county court actions including liquor licenses and contracts, plus fireworks in Rockport. D. T. Laird named Filmore elector in the second district.
Young residents of Rockport enjoyed a neighborhood picnic in Snyder's grove with music from a string band. A Senate bill would fund a census in Kansas ahead of its statehood. Kentucky Whig convention opposed Filmore with a 16 to 1 vote. The Democrat thanks C R Rudd of Evansville for early papers.
Last week’s Democrat reported Spencer County voter counts for all townships except Hammond and Jackson. Jackson lists 226 white voters, Hammond 651 white voters and 23 Black voters.
A series of marriage notices lists Hilary Ernspiger 21 laborer of Evansville marrying Ethel Wiggins 18 of Evansville on July 3 by Henry Brand JP. James C Hall 22 railroader of Indianapolis marries Ethel Gertrude Conner 21 of Lamar on July 5 by Henry Brand JP. Elliott 22 farmer of Dale wed Minnie Wood 21 of Dale on July 5 by Henry Brand. George Schnellenberger 29 baker of St Meinrad wed Amelia K Klueh 27 of Huff.
A horse owned by Raldy Frank of near Pattonville was struck by a car while following a car track onto a trestle at Ninth street. The horse fell from the trestle and died. Frank escaped unharmed and his buggy was only lightly damaged. No witnesses recorded the exact sequence of events.
Names of May examination applicants adjacted qualified for entrance into state high schools. Also notes on grades school work age time in eighth grade and general conditions used for promotion. Following items include pupil names and a staff travel report about Maggie Barker and family plans and local remodeling of Judge R E Roberts residence.
George P. Ludwig & Sons own 180 acre Sunny Slope Farm near Buffaloville. The motto Honest y in all dealings with men is recorded with the farm name. The business aims to produce life’s necessities and ban harmful goods. tobacco is not grown. Only one farmer may use a given name under the law.
Parley Kine of Grandview was found guilty of first degree murder in the killing of Conductor Oscar Kaehier of the Evansville and Eastern Railway Co. The jury deliberated an hour and a half, taking three ballots before the verdict. King showed no reaction when the sentence of life imprisonment was announced. His wife and three children were absent from the courtroom.
