Saturday evening a rainstorm preceded a rock road election with 71 in favor and 34 against. The measure passed by 37 votes. Evanston backed the road by 8 votes despite expectations. The Fourth of July celebration occurred at Tell City with many from Troy attending. The Water Queen showboat played in Troy Sunday. Mary Eger of Louisville visits her mother. Cotton Brothers drove 37 hogs to market. Tell City beat Louisville in a ball game. Peter Baker and Son bought a used Ford roadster for business use. John Mueller Jr. of Evansville visits relatives nearby.
Camp Fire Girls plan an ice cream supper in Hatfield on Saturday night July 10. Mr and Mrs G S Jones have returned home after a short trip to visit relatives. Miss Eloise McKinney was on the sick list but is improved. Miss Jenevieve Sanders is visiting friends in Boonville this week.
Miss Estella Lieniger niece of J. C. Haines of Richland City married Lonnie Q. Main at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in a home ceremony conducted by Rev. C. C. Pirtle. Main is son of O. L. Main.
Mr and Mrs W E Kessinger of Mobile Alabama are visiting Mr and Mrs Wash Whitehouse on North Fourth Street.
Charles Dawson sues Jim Ellis for damages 2000 on breach of contract. Emma C. Monroe seeks divorce from Jesse Monroe with alimony 1000 and custody of three children. Edith McKassan files for divorce from John McKassan for abandonment and support, asks custody of Margery Rose. Earnest Bowman sues Kate Bowman for cruel treatment and divorce. Frank Baker seeks divorce from Hattie Barker for cruelty. Multiple marriage listings accompany accompanying names and ages from Owensboro Rockport and related counties.
Governor James P Goodrich issued a formal call for a special session of the Indiana legislature at 1 30 p m Monday July 12. Financing state institutions is seen as the main issue with potential bills on a 10 million dollar war memorial and about a dozen topics expected.
Resolutions from the Spencer County Bar Association back Judge Elbert M. Swan for the Indiana Appellate Court. Swan, a Cincinnati Law School LLB graduate, has practiced in Indiana for over forty years and served six years as judge of the Second Judicial Circuit. He is a Mason, Knight of Pythias, and Sigma Chi alumnus, praised for ability, fairness, and public spirit.
Miss Marjorie Cain hosted a bridal shower at her home Tuesday evening for Downey Kessner. Many beautiful presents were received from friends in celebration of the bride and groom.
A large delegation from Carter Harrison and Grass townships urged the Board of County Commissioners to act on petitions for improving the Dale and St Meinrad road and the Chrisney and Maxville road under the county unit law. Commissioners McKinney and Kennedy voted to continue the petitions until the August session despite endorsements from the State Highway Commission and other planned county roads. Other road petitions await decision as public interest remains high.
Gov. James M. Cox of Ohio secures the Democratic nomination on the 44th ballot for president and Franklin D. Roosevelt of New York is chosen as running mate. The San Francisco convention is praised for people ruling without bosses and money, contrasting with Chicago.
The fifth of July event and first district meeting of the M W of A at Roskport Fair Grounds drew at least 5 000 despite rain. A parade led by the Rockport band opened events, Rev Altmeier spoke on Woodcraft and Patriotism, and Lt Clarence Walker aided. Evansville won the flag drill, Mt Vernon closely trailed. Races featured winners Corneras Jr Sunshine and Roy Mack. James Rimstidt suffered a serious foot injury in pole vault. The Rockport band debuted in new uniforms. Royal Neighbors served meals. organizers hope for annual celebrations.
Large delegations from St Meinrad Mariah Hill Dale and Chrisney with hundreds of taxpayers gathered Tuesday urging the County Commissioners to take up county unit road petitions pending over a year. They say taxpayers should spend their own money to build roads after complying with the law.
The city purchased a new fire engine from the Howe Fire Engine Co for 3065 dollars. The outfit, mounted on a Ford one ton truck, includes a chemical extinguisher and hook ladder and is painted red. When the gong sounds, the red wagon should clear the streets.
The Rockport Board of Trustees passed a resolution at a regular session asking the Public Utility Commission to permit the Traction Company to remove its track from Main Street east of Fifth Street. The company must pay for eight feet of street improvement using the city resurfacing material. Citizens hope Main Street will be fully improved with asphalt or concrete soon.
Miss Pearl Daurghty daughter of Mrs Rosa Daurghty near Eureka and Samuel G Allen of this city were quietly married at 2 pm Saturday by Esqr Inco. Mr Allen works at Richards garage. They will move to Indianapolis later in August. The Democrat extends congratulations.
