Rockport Rains Struck Lightning Repairs and Court News

A Monday afternoon downpour brought the first effective rain since April with lightning striking the S. W. Stocking residence chimney and Trinity Lutheran Church cupola causing minor damage. Telephone lines on Elm street were severed and the traction line briefly halted. A Tuesday night shower spread to surrounding areas. In Rockport a court in Luce township again addressed the school building contract with a temporary restraining order issued until July 5. A large iron safe tumble caused noise but no injuries. Democratic notes from Rockport recount resolutions for James Martin, local marriages, a court-house school trustees meeting, and a 4th of July piece urging attendance at a regional ratification event in Indiana County.

Large Barn Burns in Eureka Farm Blaze

A lightning strike Friday set Wm. Stevenson’s large east Eureka barn ablaze, driven out by stock. Estimated loss about 2000 dollars with insured items including machinery harness 700 bushels corn forty tons hay 100 bushels barley, cow peas and 14000 feet yellow poplar lumber also destroyed.

Death of Wyman A Squier at 19 after typhoid illness

Wyman Axton Squier died at home northwest of Rockport after a three week typhoid fever. Funeral at Mt Zion with Rev L Todd. Born March 6 1894 he was 19 years 8 months 24 days. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs Charles F Squier a brother and two sisters.

Grandview Chautauqua Programs Issued

The Grandview Chautauqua programs have been issued and are being distributed this week. Management promises interesting features and a successful meet. The event will be at Thurman’s Grove with traction management stopping cars at the grove entrance for visitors.

Union Religious Meeting Unites Churches for Outdoor Services

Beginning Sunday night July 6 pastors from Christian Lutheran Methodist and Presbyterian churches will unite congregations for open air services at the bluff Elm and Second. Rural mail carriers plan their annual Evansville meeting next Sunday to discuss job security.

County Wins Suit Over Lake Drain Bridge Construction

The A ES & W Construction Company recovered no money from Spencer County after a Vanderburgh circuit court verdict. The Lake Drain bridge on Grandview road cracked soon after opening and remains in use though broken. The contractor had guaranteed proper completion within one year.
