James W. Wartman and Miss Mary Graham of Rockport wed on January 22, traveling soon to Cincinnati. Editor R. Hicks was absent in Indianapolis as a clerk in the lower house while The Democrat discussed Indiana politics and banking law reforms.

Lease of lands for oil and gas near Lake Mills Ohio township

County Recorder Vaal records a new lease batch for oil and gas near Lake Mills in Ohio township. About 1000 acres are leased in Hughes and Clark of Mt. Carmel Illinois names. Lessees must complete a well within eight months or pay 40 dollars quarterly to keep the lease alive, with at least one test well to be completed near Lake Mill within the period.

Former High School Principal George P Weedman Dies

Prof. George P Weedman once led Rockport high school and later served as superintendent of North Vernon schools Indiana. He died recently in Newburn Tennessee and his remains were moved to North Vernon for interment. Ill health forced his retirement at the start of the current school year.

Professors to Visit Rockport Schools for Talk

Prof. Frank M. Leavitt of the University of Chicago and Charles W. Sylvester of Indianapolis will visit Rockport public schools on Thursday afternoon February 5. They will also speak at the Seminary buildings to the eighth grade at 3 30. The public and all interested in education are invited.

Losses From Defective Flues Hit Indiana Homes

A state fire marshal report shows a total fire loss of 60000 from defective flues in Indiana in December. About 100 fires from this cause were recorded, with winter heating driving the rise. November saw 88 such fires, December up twelve from that figure.

County Assessors to Meet in Princeton

The county assessors of southwest Indiana will meet in Princeton on February 20. Vanderburgh Warrick Posey Knox Daviess Spencer Dubois Perry and Gibson counties will be represented to discuss uniform methods of taxing property across the district.

To Become Elks Initiates at Boonville Lodge

Lieb Nominated by Acclamation at Evansville Democratic Convention

The Evansville democratic district convention nominated Charles Lieb of Rockport for congress by acclamation after speeches by George W. Curtis and Judge M. B. Larry. The large gathering at Evans Hall approved Lieb’s record and endorsed his reelection, with Curtis praising Lieb as a proven congressman and worker for Indiana’s first district.

Enormous Red Cross Sales Reported in Indiana

Reports from Red Cross Seal headquarters in Indianapolis show Indiana breaking prior records with six cities Ft Wayne Indianapolis Evansville Terre Haute South Bend and Logansport contributing to a campaign tally near 20000 dollars. About 2006 dollars go to the American Red Cross for anti tuberculosis work in Indiana in 1914. Localities plan aggressive measures against tuberculosis as part of a state wide program.

Fire Destroys Two Houses and Barn in North Rockport

Two unoccupied cottages and a barn owned by Ed Bressler on Madison Street North Rockport were destroyed by a fire shortly after midnight. Incendiary origin is suspected. Firemen could not reach the blaze due to location and hose shortage. The nearby button factory was saved by a bucket brigade. The barn held broom straw and about fifty ducks. most fowl perished. Bressler had about one thousand dollars in insurance on the houses. no barn coverage.

Toole Divorce Granted with Custody and Support

The divorce suit of Dollie Toole against Oliver B. Toole occupied the court Tuesday and Wednesday with many witnesses. The plaintiff was granted a divorce and custody of their 11 year old daughter. She was awarded $1000 alimony and $100 attorney’s fees and $100 per year for child maintenance payable January 1 and July 1.

Birthday celebration for Henry Brand’s 72nd year

About thirty friends and relatives gathered at Henry Brand’s Elm Street home last Thursday to celebrate his 72nd birthday. A fine dinner followed and attendees included W. E. Brand and wife, Mary J. Richey and family, Lizzie Garrett and family, Cora Tullis and family, Kate Tullis and Frank Brand.

Sewers Nearing Completion on 8th Street Hill

Contractors dig through the hill on 8th street between Williamson and Washington to lay sewer lines 30 feet underground. About 500 feet remain to be installed before sewers are effectively complete. Attorney William McClain of Boonville visited the city on business. He seeks the Democratic nomination for prosecuting attorney.
