Washington reports underlined plan to base tariff revision on taxing luxuries to fund necessities. Chairman Underwood signals free lumber, shingles, and possibly free meats as part of tentative tariff proposals for the extra session, aligning with promises made pre election.
The Lafayette event for the short course and corn show drew high praise from Mr Mell Swallow. Officials hailed the program as the best ever with the largest exhibit count and finest quality. The ten ears sweepstakes winner was described as the best ten ears of corn shown at any corn show. Johnson county has a history of success.
Henry Schartung aged 5 farmer from Owenboro KY weds Emma Hoffman aged 20 from Perry county. Ollie Deeg 23 Spencer county merchant weds Roy E Mattingley 20 Spencer county by Edwin H Boldrey. John G Burkhart 48 Spencer county farmer weds Cora Napper 45 Spencer county. Virgil Heckel 17 Spencer county farmer weds Maude Lindsey 15. Walter W Jones 21 bowling alley worker in Rockport weds Edna Martin 20 clerk in Rockport.
William E White sues Hulda White for divorce alleging cruel and inhuman treatment after a January 1907 marriage and a November 191f separation. Attorneys for plaintiff are Smith and McCullough. Parsons and Sesville Co. vs Frank G Brand on account. Pierson and Pierson represent the plaintiff.
Real estate transfers include Maria E to Elizabeth Lipsey with the wine 855 value of 1200, Hawkins Angelene to Patrick H Axton nw sw 367 value 2300, Emma J Fella to Frank J Dilger 75 pt 117 6 82 value 6222.75, and Grant Jackson to John H Schwoeppe pt ne sw 1176 p anch 16. The week saw 55 mortgages recorded. Dr R R Rhoades of Hureka visited the city on business.
From The Democrats' files January 22 1859 the 12th inst saw about 500 acres on corn island ten miles north of town transfer for 20000 dollars. Seller William C Ewing buyer John James of Canne lton with stock and mills paid in goods. Ewing plans moving to Rockport and reviving his flour mill for next harvest. James to farm corn island. he is well off and educated. Also noted are pleasant weather days and local business moves including Mec Wright leaving for Vicksburg, G B Bullock returning with groceries, and McCombs forming a grocery partnership with N J Pearce.
The cause of Madison Ice versus Isaac L Kramer was assigned for trial January 28. A set of other cases follows: Sidney W Stocking versus Benjamin versus Huffman continued at plaintiff’s cost. Rockport Water Works Company versus Rockport Drain Tile Company reassigned for trial February 7, 1918. Ola Horn versus Angeline Hawkins dismissed on motion of plaintiff with costs paid.
Minor heirs of Basil C Moseley reported to the court and the case Aley Anders vs David J Bennett estate was reassigned for trial on February 14. Della Evans was granted a divorce from George Evans.
The Rockport based company with $5,000 capital stock in shares of 310 aims to buy hold and sell real estate and act as agent for rents. Incorporators include Frank Kincaid R W Richards James G Hill Samuel Schumacher Otto Kramer Henry A Wilbern Frank M Richards Shirley Schumacher Charles A Wilbern Louis B Wilkinson Mollie Fuerster plus stockholders A S Lindsey W W Kellams C C Kincaid Dave Stilwell and Mary C Jacobs.
A reader in Seattle, J. C. Simpson, sends one dollar to renew a newspaper delivery for the past eleven years. He asks to continue at the same Rockport address and signs off with a nostalgic note and a greeting to old friends.
A January 21, 1913 letter from Wini A. Motteler in Peoria Illinois requests address change to 112 No Frink St and mentions selling a Rockport property on Greenwood St with 80 ft front. He notes they are well and enjoy the paper. An Express Money Order for $2.60 is included.
The 1912 year ends with abundant crops and strong producer prospects though meat stock shortages push prices up. Wayne Schriefer of Grass town ship visited the city on business as Shoals News notes potential for continued prosperity if the coming season is fair.
Indianapolis dispatch reports the Indiana House advanced an inheritance tax measure with a progressive rate, exemptions for spouses and children, and ongoing work on a worker compensation proposal. Senate utilities bills and franchise measures also surfaced as 200 House and 137 Senate bills had been filed by Tuesday. Henry Roetzel of Rockport toured the capital on his Washington visit.
An Eastern Star auxiliary gathering was held Tuesday afternoon at Miss Jamie Procter's home with hostesses Miss Procter Mrs J A Sargent Mrs Tom Gillette Mrs J H Logan and Miss Mollie Hall. Chapter colors decorated the rooms and irish cream and cake were served. Music contests and social chat provided diversions and Mrs Bays attended as a visitor.
The Ohio River level has been receding since last Sunday with rapid drops in Cincinnati and Louisville. Reports say the shrinking waters freed coal shipments to the South, as many residents visited the river to view its vast expanse.
Miss Edna Martin daughter of Mr and Mrs Ed Martin and Mr Watson Jones were married last Saturday night at the Christian church parsonage Rev L N Warble officiating. They were assisted by Miss Pearl Conner and Gus Powers. The couple are well known here and friends wish them a long happy life.
Wells-Bijou theatre Evansville presents Frank Deshon and Ruth Peebles in A Modern Eve for three performances Friday night and Saturday matinee and night January 24 25. Madame Sherry comes January 28 and Mme Emma Calve in concert January 31. Mail orders receive careful attention. Car service resumed between Evansville and Grandview after high water delay. James Sutton known as boneless fish rag died at his home Evansville aged 53. Rev E H Boldrey united Ollie Deeg and Roy Mattingley in marriage Eureka. Protracted meeting closed at United Brethren church after a successful run led by Myrtle Toda.
