Sudden Death of Chas M Morris at Pfeiffer Flats
Chas M Morris aged 26 years 9 months 20 days died suddenly at 3 30 a m Sunday at his father’s home in Pfeiffer flats due to organic heart trouble. A coroner's inquest was held. Funeral services were conducted at the home on the 15th, with burial in the Catholic cemetery officiated by Fr Schaub. R H Crowder of Richland City visited town on business.

NEW COUNTY INFIRMARY PLANNED IN 1917 FUNDS
During a special county session the 1917 appropriation includes 20000 for a new county infirmary and 6000 for a site. Deciding whether to buy land or reuse the old premises will occur at the February board of commissioners meeting. The board may keep the farm or sell it for a more convenient site along the traction line. Construction to begin this spring.

Wheat Blankets Ohio Valley in First Heavy Snow

Spencer County Requisition Honors Lincoln Marker Centenary Session
Spencer county officials met in special session to approve 1917 appropriations including 2000 for the infirmary and 6600 for a building site. A Lincoln cabin marker to honor Abraham Lincoln was contracted with F J Scholz & Son of Evansville for 350 dollars, with Allen J Payton and others overseeing the centennial plan. William Burkhart died January 11 at his son Marvin Burkhart’s home, age 89 years 4 months and 22 days. The funeral was held at Shiloh Cemetery last Saturday with services by Elder Rev. Shake.

Aders Wins Purdue and State Dairy Prizes
Guy Aders, in charge of J. S. Pattie’s thirty Jersey cows, won a Purdue university short course scholarship by producing the most butter fat at the lowest cost in the Warrick and Spencer county contest during April and May 1916. He earned the state free trip to Washington with expenses paid. Pattie’s herd proves Southern Indiana’s dairy potential and attracts inquiries from other states for stock.

Old Soldier William Garvin Dies at 86 in Hatfield Area
William Garvin, bachelor and Civil War veteran of Company G 26th Regiment, died Tuesday morning at 10:30 at John Stateville's home. Funeral services were held Thursday in the May Hall chapel by Rev. Robbins, with interment at Sunset Hill. A Farmers Institute is set for Hatfield school next Saturday January 20.

The Fifth annual Purdue corn show and short course ran August 8 to 19. Spencer County and Ohio Township dominated prizes in the fifth section, with Myler Shrode winning the state premium trophy for best ear of dent corn. The event praised county agents and boy clubs guiding 10 to 18 year olds through lessons to promote scientific farming and richer rural wealth.

The Spencer county board of charities and correction held its quarterly meeting January 9 at the county farm. Members noted wrecked infirmary from November and recommended rebuilding on the same site, with land not purchased elsewhere. Four prisoners at the jail, two awaiting trial, one serving, one insane. urged new courthouse and jail. At the orphans’ home thirty children, eighteen boys and twelve girls, are mostly in school and in good health. Nannie Beeler, secretary.

The Spencer County Farmers Institute met in the city Auditorium for two days of sessions with large attendance. Mel Swallow filled in for absent county agent O A Burrell and spoke on growing corn and soybeans. Purdue speakers Mrs Hence Orme and C M Cornell discussed Comfort and Convenience and The Silo on the Farm. A regulation was adopted opposing splitting the Spencer Warrick judicial circuit. The Democrat will publish full proceedings next week.
