Prominent Citizen Bridges Dies Suddenly at Home
Benjamin F Bridges of Rockport died of heart trouble at his Fourth street home Wednesday morning. He served in the Twenty-fifth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, taught school, held Spencer county auditor posts, and later farmed before moving to Rockport. He married Elizabeth Cooper in 1868 and leaves a daughter Mrs James A Lard and a son Carrel, plus relatives. Funeral Friday at 2 pm at the Presbyterian church with Rev G N Wall. Interment Sunset Hill cemetery.

The board of state charities reports at September 30 that thirteen counties held more than twenty inmates. Marion led with 40 in jail and 54 in the workhouse, followed by Vigo with 85, Lake 84, and Vanderburgh 69. total jail population was 1,255 with 77 women. 36,380 admissions included 33,349 men, 771 boys, 2,106 women, and 154 girls. 4,709 were vagrants and 15,068 served sentences or layout fines.
