Jones Bill Proposes Philippine Congress and Elective Presidency

The proposal would vest legislative power in a Congress of the Philippines with a 38 member senate and 87 member House, both elective. During a probationary period executive power would lie with a President appointed for four years by the U S President, later elective by Filipinos after July 4, 1921.

Rockport Citizen John Higgins Smith Dies at Home

John Higgins Smith of Rockport died suddenly at his South Sixth Street home last Friday evening from heart trouble. Funeral services were Sunday at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. E. H. Boldrey. interment in Sunset Hill cemetery. He was born December 26, 1836 in Ohio, married Sarah Josephine Farley in 1860, and leaves nine children, four sons Dan H. Charles T. John H. Herbert O., and two daughters Nellie Chadwell and Maud Spayd, plus one brother Louis G. of Terre Haute. He was the last surviving family member and a member of the M. E. church.

Wells Bijou Safe Robbed In Evansville

Thieves cracked the Wells Bijou theatre manager’s office safe in Evansville early Monday. About 300 dollars in change was taken. Police suspect the same robber linked to prior safes in Carmi Mt Vernon Cannelton Huntingburg and other Kentucky towns. An electric drill and nitro glycerine were used to breach the steel door.
