Senator B. F. Shively is chosen by Democrats as their U S Senate candidate. Ballots in the selection process were reported complete with the necessary steps to finalize the nomination.
Benjamin F. Shively of South Bend secures the Democratic caucus nomination for senator after a six hour closed session and a 42 to 35 deciding ballot lead over Kern. The caucus will join with the other house to elect the senator, replacing Hemenway, with Shively likely to win. Lincoln centennial school programs urged across Spencer County for February 12, 1909, highlighting school activities and a state prepared program.
John Baumgaertner died suddenly in Fresno California. His body arrived in Tell City on the 420 traction car and was taken to Dr Otto Baumgaertner’s home for a funeral conducted by Rev Gross. He was born May 1 1843 in Canton Graubuenden Switzerland and emigrated to the United States in 1865. He lived in Tell City then Rockport and served as Spencer County circuit court clerk from 1892 to 1896. He remarried after 1870 to Phillipena Neuhart and had four children including Dr Otto Baumgaertner of Tell City and Henry of Seattle. He also leaves a sister in Tell City.
The Rockport Improvement Association and the Civic Improvement Society invite members to an evening event at the auditorium on January 27. Officials of the Southern and Electric railways and the Owensboro Rockport Bridge Company will attend as guests. The Civic society provides the menu and charges a dollar per plate, with proceeds funding a working fund for the Civic society.
Former pastor Rev F G Ellis of the local Baptist church died at his Lewisport Kentucky home on Wednesday January 6. He had been in ill health for some time and was sixty five years old.
The will recorded in the clerk’s office and dated January 5 1909 leaves several Hatfield lots to Clara B Ingle in fee simple after debts. It also grants Clara a forty acre Luce township farm for life with remainder to their heirs. Alva McKenney named executor and the will is witnessed by Frank Ashby and Albert Goard.
Mrs Albert Miller living in the southern city near the river slipped on ice covered steps before her home last Monday morning and sustained a serious fracture of the thigh bone. She is about seventy five and resides alone. The accident may prove fatal due to her age.
A fine list of performances is booked for the Wells-Bijou theatre in Evansville next week. Wednesday features Sir Gilbert Parker's The Right of Way with Theo Roberts Guy Standing and May Buckley. Thursday presents Maxine Elliott’s Under a Greenwood Tree. Friday and Saturday offer matinee and night showings of The Wolf by the author of Paid in Full.

A new consignment of about thirty pheasants arrived this week for the Jackson township game preserve. Nine birds were released last year, now three coveys total about forty birds, doubling the original stock. Birds are roughly twice the size of common quail and the preserve is expected to be stocked thoroughly in a few years.
