As farmers face five billion dollars in debt and mounting losses, Republican leaders push a bill to raise Federal Land Bank loan limits from 10 000 to 25 000. Critics say it offers debt, not relief, and ignores the root cause of farm distress following the Democratic win in 1921.
Rhoda Helen Butler Huffman wife of John Riley Huffman died January 4 1928 at the Huffman home in Huffman Indiana aged 74. Born February 25 1853 she married John Riley Huffman December 5 1869. They had ten children five living Millard C Huffman Lola M Peckinpaugh Jane Guffy John M Huffman and Roscoe B Huffman. She was a trusted business advisor to her husband and moved to Evansville before returning to her old home shortly before death. She was loved in the community and left a lasting memory.
Mrs Emma Thielen daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Heidelbech of Dale and her infant daughter died Monday night at her Owensboro home. She is 35. Survived by parents husband Albert Thielen three sisters Frances Fisher Elizabeth Fleck of Louisville Mayme Lubenhusen of Dale and brother Louis Heidelbech of Louisville. Funeral services were held Wednesday in Owensboro with burial in the Catholic cemetery there.
The literary club met last Monday at Mrs. W. C. Mason’s home. Mrs. George Steitler led the program on Famous Actors withVictrola music accompanying the discussion.
The Board of Finance met January 3 with six members present and selected public depositories for county civil town and school town funds for 1923 to 1924. First National Bank received 25,000, Farmers' Bank 25,000, Old Rockport Bank 20,000, Lake State Bank 15,000, Grandview Bank 25,000, Dale State Bank 15,000, Chrisney State Bank 15,000, Farmers and Merchants State Bank 15,000. First National Bank was awarded civil school funds 15,000 and Old Rockport Bank school town funds 20,000.
Louis Niblack formerly lived with his aunt Mrs. Kate Niblack died in Los Angeles while visiting relatives. His body to be brought to Rockport for burial with a Monday Methodist church funeral and American Legion military honors. He served in World War I with Canadian forces and helped breach the Hindenburg line. death due to war injuries and illness. Miss Kittie Niblack arrived from Oklahoma City to arrange funeral. Trinity Lutheran church held its annual congregational meeting Thursday at the parsonage on Elm Street.
Circuit court actions include a divorce granted to Clarence F. Whitney with custody of three minor children and a divorce revoked for Warren B. Conner after review. Trials set and adjustments announced for cases involving Edward Herr, First National Bank and other local parties. Notable mental health and estate matters involve several individuals and firms with hearings scheduled into January 1928.
Prominent Indiana jurist James Edmund McCullough died at his Greenfield home January 2 1923. Born April 1 1847 in Ohio he had a noted legal career including service in the General Assembly First Assistant Attorney General and U S Supreme Court work. He is survived by wife Emma Turner a son Walter C sisters Elmyra Gwaltney and John Ely and W A McCullough nephew.
Opal Hamilton six year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Hamilton of Shiloh neighborhood died Wednesday after a three weeks illness of pneumonia. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at Shiloh church conducted by Rev. W. H. Minter. Opal leaves her parents three sisters and one brother.
Cyril Garret departs January 18 for Indianapolis to pursue dentistry studies at Indiana College.
County Agent notes urge proactive community plans for the New Year and highlight the Taylor Spencer County Cow Testing Association forming with about 20 dairymen signed and 24 members aimed. It outlines testing practices, cow selection, feeding strategies and the promise of data driven dairy profits.
Judge Herdis F. Clements of Mt. Vernon urged Samuel M. Ralston as the Democratic candidate for president in 1924 at the Jackson Day dinner in Evansville. About 400 Democrats attended the Vendome hotel event hosted by the Vanderburgh Democratic club with remarks by mayor Elmerdorf and other district leaders. A cable message to Woodrow Wilson closed the program.
At the First National Bank annual meeting on Tuesday afternoon, directors elected were John G. Haines Chas C Kincaid Philip J Bretz Henry Maas William J Kramer Robert L Lawbury and John H Walker. The new board then organized naming John G Haines president Henry Maas cashier Joe A Brown assistant cashier and Miss Lora Miller book keeper.
G A R J C Veatch Post No 123 installed new officers for the coming year led by Samuel Wesley as commander and Byrum Cotton as senior vice commander. Joseph McAdams of Bryansville served as installing officer during the 43rd annual installation.
