A cryptic note references Xavier Handel and a post office in a setting with a black horse and a rock port location. The text hints at a dramatic clash involving a figure dubbed the affidaviter and a claimed sure thing in a tense local scene.
In a rambling letter X. H. alleges Befferidge backs a plan for a Rockport postmaster job to cushion his party and self. He claims Befferidge, Billy Adams, Fred Heuring, and Billy Eigenmann maneuver for patronage while denouncing rival Democrats and county politics.
Edith Margaret Dailey wed Ligget K. Shannon of St. Louis on Saturday evening February 12 at the Dailey residence on Walnut street. Rev. Edwin Boldrey officiated with Mendelssohn’s wedding march rendered by Miss Henrietta Wood. Out of town guests included Mrs. Philip Geissler and others from Evansville, Bloomfield, Poseyville, Grandview, Boonville and Owensboro. Guests and gifts reflected a blend of utility and beauty as the couple began their life in St. Louis.
Mr and Mrs Arch Stevenson hosted a Valentines themed four table bridge party for young marrieds at their Second and Walnut street home. Red heart decor framed chandeliers and score cards while a luncheon of chicken salad and heart shaped biscuits followed. Ladies winner Mrs J H Fuelster and gentlemen winner Mr Fuelster.
A consignment of twenty pairs of Hungarian quails arrived at R E Roberts from York ley Pa via the state game commissioner. They will be liberated in the Jackson- Clay township game preserve near Gentryville after keeping in the coop until budding time. This brings total released in the preserve to ninety six. eight thousand birds were sent out recently to state game preserves.
Evansville post master Charles G Covert receives appointment as collector of internal revenue for the Seventh Indiana district, succeeding John R Bonnell of Crawfordsville.
In a Circuit Court notes item, Alice Hobbs is granted a divorce and $300 alimony while Huldaa DeBruler is mentioned in probate actions. The brief mentions a will proceeding linked to DeBruler.
The January term adjourned with divorces granted to Alice Hobbs from Isaac Hobbs, and Mary Berrel seekingrailroad damages amended to specify trolley wire contact. Custody given to Cora Crowder. several estates and guardianship actions noted, and multiple cases set for future trials with April, May, and July dates. A reader letter from F. M. Noted in New York in the Dry Goods Economist February 5 issue, a full page write up covers C W Halbruge Co's new Rockport store building. It includes three photos of the dry goods department show window and balcony view and praises heating lighting and interior finish.
Snow piled seven inches by Thursday noon as a deep winter storm sweeps across the area. Central weather reports warn of lingering frictionless roads and continued cold conditions, with more precipitation possible later this week.
The council approves a 40 candle power light at crossings on Sycamore Vine Fifth and Washington streets for Southern Railway and a light at Ninth street for Evansville and Eastern, with $25 daily penalties. An Evansville and Eastern Electric freight franchise on Main street from Highth to Rockport Milling property is introduced for fifty years, to include a switch and hauling rights. it awaits next regular meeting.
Five suits filed in Spencer circuit court by C. P. McClary and company tobacco merchants to recover damages for failure to deliver tobacco under a pooling contract. The agreement binds individuals to deliver within December to May or forfeit twenty.
A series of marriage notices shows Curtis Allen and Maude Merethen, both of Rockport, along with others including Benjamin Stewart and Daisy Sharrad from Kentucky. Several couples, such as Liggett Shannon and Edith Dailey, John Thompson and Nora Miller, Frank Medley and Gertrude Foster, Thomas Meissner and May Rittinger, and Jasper Abney and Jennis Atherton, are recorded with spouses from Rockport or Kentucky. All ceremonies are dated in February.
The Democrat notes the dilapidated sidewalk and steps in front of the M. E. church on 5th Street in Rockport. It urges civic pride to replace the unsightly approach with new steps and a concrete pavement, pledging support for the improvement.
Musical exercises by all school grades on Monday and Tuesday afternoons drew modest parent attendance. Pupils showed thorough drill in musical rudiments and easy submission to Miss Berry, whose work for the children receives high marks.
Fire gutted a saloon on Third Street between Main and Walnut early Tuesday, starting in the rear and wrecking fixtures and stock. Building damage pegged at 400 dollars with 500 dollars insurance on stock and 500 on the building. Building owned by Henry A Roetzel. saloon operated by John Harris.
Miss Hdna Martin celebrated her eighteenth birthday with a Valentine themed party at her Walnut Street home Tuesday evening. Hearts and pink white decor set the scene for an evening of music and games followed by pink and white ices and cakes.
About a dozen tracts were sold at the courthouse door by County Treasurer Jacobs for delinquent taxes. The sale realized about 150 dollars and will continue daily until all advertised tracts are offered. Lands listed for ditch taxes were not sold.
