Indiana editors urge unity in May 1918 primaries to back President Wilson and elect capable, patriotic candidates. Democrats claim Goodrich era failed, pledge to block personal machines, and push for strong war leadership in Congress and Indiana General Assembly.
Proceedings in Spencer circuit court include not guilty verdicts in wife desertion and assault cases, drainage petitions heard, a restraining order case taken under advisement, a divorce granted, real estate sale appointment, replevin dismissed, and damages claims filed. Appointments to the board of charities guardians and other county posts are listed with terms.
A thrift stamp club formed last Friday at Silverdale School with Miss Laura Wright as teacher guiding twenty two students and patrons. After spring school ends C F Brown plans an industrial class at his farm to teach milking and cow care to children needing extra learning. It is a patriotic effort to foster thrift.
The Mt Vernon contest of the Marsh will was compromised today Thursday with reports that Clarence Wright received $7500 to influence the outcome.
County commissioners met in session with all members present and approved plans for a new court house. Bids for construction are advertised to open March 25. An old court house is to be sold April 6 with removal within 45 days. Journal notes January 1918 rock road report shows no spending. Election commissioners named for Grass township rock road vote with assigned inspectors and judges for February 12. Additional petitions on Ohio township rock road continued.
Rudolph Etzkorn Sr. a Rockport tailor with sons Rudolph Jr and Oscar died at his Wenatchee home on January 24. The body was moved to Rockport for Catholic burial conducted by Rev F E Sehauf. He was born in Germany and came to the U S 81 years ago and lived in Rockport about 12 years before moving to Washington. Surviving: Rudolph of Monitor Warren Marie Braun Columbus Oscar and Mrs Frank Kuntz and Mrs Wm Sturm of Wenatchee.
The Little Theatre group in Spencer County staged two strong performances on Thursday and Friday to aid the Red Cross. The Thursday crowd filled the auditorium while Friday drew full seating and standing room. Proceeds amounted to 230 dollars, directed to Mrs. C. D. Ehrman who oversaw the event.
The transport carrying 2179 American soldiers was torpedoed near Ireland on Wednesday. Four hundred seventy seven are unaccounted, but 1912 are safe. Most troops are from Wisconsin and Michigan and include Aero Squadron recruits from various states. Details and casualty figures have not been received.
The County Council of Defense appoints a committee to contact Spencer county farmers about raising better grade ewes for mutton and wool. Farmers are urged to participate as a patriotic duty to increase wool and mutton output. Chairman Karl W. Kramer leads, with Harwood Sibert and L. or B. Wilkinson as members.
Spencer County War Conference held in the city drew large crowds despite icy roads. Speakers urged patriotism, thrift, and food conservation, with Army deputy remarks by Lt. Hector McQuarrie and strong calls for women’s wartime leadership and support across schools, Red Cross, and defense councils.
