Miner crushed to death in Evanston coal mine accident

Joseph Gerber, sixty three, was fatally crushed when a ton of coal fell in William Steins coal mine near Evanston. He died within minutes, with three or four fellow miners nearby. Coroner Weiss held an inquest before the body was sent to Canneton for burial.

Strawboard plant to start October readiness under way

The strawboard factory continues hiring as it prepares to run. It will not begin until around October first and will produce a lighter diamond match board with Manila coating on one side. An Evansville man exhausted resources in Rockport, placards claimed a $12.50 round trip fare if travelers ride only one way on the traction line.

City Board of Health Appointments Confirmed

At a Wednesday meeting Mayor Walker appointed Arch Stevenson and Charles Darneal to the city board of health. The appointments were confirmed and each member’s salary set at 12 per year.

Parker Arrested for Malicious Trespass in Evanston

Will Parker was arrested Tuesday evening by Deputy Sheriff John Stockhowe on a malicious trespass charge. He was lodged in Rockport county jail awaiting court action for a violation believed to have occurred months ago in Evanston.

Rockport Fair Proves Successful Despite Bad Weather

The Rockport fair reported strong attendance despite heavy rain on Thursday and Friday. Organizers note Saturday drew the largest crowd in its 21 years as improvements to the fair grounds were completed.

Young Man Dies After Illness at Sister’s Home

Ruple Frank aged 20 died at his sister Mrs Cland Lusk’s home near Pattonville Tuesday morning after a bout of inflammatory rheumatism. Funeral held at Shiloh church Wednesday afternoon with Rev A A Godby officiating. He survives two brothers and two sisters. W C Mason and family visited Boonville for the big fair. Mrs Mason to stay a few days. Rev F W Wolf of St Martins Church at Chrisney did city business Thursday. JT R Hardy, D L Morgan and WW Kellams traveled to Tell City and Cannelton on business last Tuesday.

Resignation at Banks School Leads to New Appointment

Iva Conner resigned as Banks school teacher for the coming term and leaves Wednesday for Danville to enter Central Normal College for next year. Miss Billa Burns is chosen to fill the position. Johnnie Zimmerman travels to Rockport to act as agent for the Southern on relief duty. The note ends with a local adage about honesty.
