Local volunteers join training for wartime service
Wednesday morning Robert E. Squier and Ben H. Atkinson were entrained at Rockport for Syracuse New York to undergo training for special war duties. Squier, a June registrant and county commissioner's son W E Squier, becomes the first county volunteer to go. Louis Frank John G Sallee and Waldo G Tableman left for Valparaiso for mechanical training. Three colored boys Ernest Clark Ivan Mahone and Porter Smith depart for Fisk University Nashville Tennessee for mechanical training. Two white men and two colored men will enter service from this county on August 5 to Syracuse and Fort Dodge Iowa respectively, not yet selected.

Rev R O Hartman pronounced the rites uniting Ken H Atkinson and Miss Elsie H Atwood in marriage at the Presbyterian manse last Sunday at 10 oclock. They are esteemed teachers with many friends. Mr Atkinson left Wednesday for a training camp in Syracuse New York. the bride will not accompany him.

Auto Crash Near Huntingburg Fractures Woman’s Arm
Mrs. Wright suffered a fracture of her right arm above the elbow in a Sunday auto accident near Huntingburg. The wreck occurred when a passing car slowed to near ditch edge and the bank caved in, tipping the Wright vehicle into a ditch. no one else was injured.

Localmen Seek Pure Bred Herfords in Franklin
John G. Rimstidt of this city and Joseph Miller of Grass township traveled to Franklin Indiana last Saturday to buy pure bred Herfords. Rimstidt bought a cow and calf for 3500. He plans further purchases and notes pure bred stock fetches high prices compared with scrub stock.

Prizes Awarded At Grandview Commencement
At the Grandview commencement exercises on Tuesday two prizes were awarded for top grades in agriculture and domestic science. Agnes Spiehler of Clay Hill and Louis Shrode of Silverdale received the awards. Pigs donated by C F Brown John Rimstidt and Mr Stateville funded the prizes. Ohio Township Farmers Institute managed the contest.

Squirrel Jumping Misadventure On Train Tracks
A fox squirrel leaped from a tree at Black Slash wood while the Rockport train passed. It misjudged the leap and entered a baggage car door. Expressman Charles Alexander captured the frightened animal before it escaped, amid wartime tension.

Auto goes over Grandview levee crash injury update
A car plunges over the Grandview levee leaving driver James Fletcher seriously injured. Four other occupants sustain minor injuries in the wreck.

Driver's Face Severely Cut By Glass In Wreck
Mrs. James Fletcher of Newton ville suffered serious injuries when the Fletcher car went off a high levee at Grandview last Monday night. The vehicle overturned and lodged against a telephone pole after meeting a buggy on the levee. Mrs. Fletcher, initially thought fatally hurt, remained unconscious for hours but is now much improved and out of danger. In the car were James Fletcher and their children Weaver Thelma and Esther, plus a Miss Painter. all sustained bruises or cuts. Weaver Fletcher received a deep facial cut from broken glass. The driver and other occupants were not all severely injured. Weeds along the roadside reduced visibility, causing the accident rodeo to the edge and over the levee in an instant. The car top was crushed though the vehicle sustained little other damage.

Tragic Rockport Death of Mrs Baumgaertner
Mrs Helen Baumgaertner wife of Dr Otto C Baumgaertner aged 40 committed suicide with a .32 revolver at their Rockport Bluff home after attending the Grandview chautauqua. The note offered no reason health decline over the past year is blamed. She was a prominent clubwoman educator and historian with deep ties to Spencer county and Indiana suffrage and Red Cross work. Funeral rites were held with Eastern Star involvement and reports praise her public service and teaching legacy.
