The Rock Valley Golf Club hosts its first annual tournament this weekend with course restricted to entrants on Saturday and Sunday. The event splits into a Championship Flight for 27 holes and three other 18-hole flights. All club members may join a two ball foursome Friday evening and a steak fry follows at 7 PM, with members bringing their own steak.
Several persons from Rock Valley will represent Valley Manor at a nursing institute visit sponsored by the Iowa Nurses Association the Iowa Dept of Health and the nursing home association. Administrator Al Porter and staff Kate Holman Hurst Doris Brower will attend as speakers. The institute begun September 1 will run until November 19 and cover patient care, staff qualifications, pharmaceutical services and aging psychology with sessions on housekeeping food and laundry.
Lovell Roberson of Mar-Cus reports a large cucumber crop with the longest vines producing cucumbers up to 22 inches in length.
In a humorous Ridiculous Day feature Bob Splear of Beverly is spoofed as Sheriff of Sioux County. The piece recalls the playful scene from last week and notes Splear adopted a western campaign costume for the event.
Two men, Judson Stith and Harold Groth, filed for the rural-area director seat on the Rock Valley Community School Board South of Highway 18. Polls open 7 am to 7 pm at City Hall. only rural-area residents may run, while district residents vote.
Miss Judy Oe Gondt won the Best Dremeed Woman title at Rock Val Séy'an annual Ridiculous Day held last Friday. A three member Commercial Club appointed judging panel selected the winners. Both the woman and man recipients will receive 5 dollars from the club with Miss DeBondt employed at The dee.
Best Costume Bill Rietsma of Valley Manor captures handdown favorite status with the Judging team at Rock Valley Hidiculous Day. The longtime resident is popular with the town’s younger generation, sharing treats with passersby throughout the year.
Harry Vander Signé leads the 44 shooters in a 16 yard event with 3900 clay birds. Oscar Ansheim shoots 49 of 50, class standings show Eng Thorsen and John Blom tied in Class C, and a four way tie in Class D among Ver Hey Van Berkum Ranichau. Handicap honors go to Clévézinga and Lenard Ver Hey, with Remtinger Neuanschwander at 21 22 yard and Freeders Kersbergen at 23 24 yard. Oscar A and Vander Stowe top 25 yard results. Doubles see Cleveringa and Kersbergen high with 2nd. Next shoot Friday Sept 27.
The Rock Valley Golf Club Men's leagues concluded last week with final standings across four 4:00 and 5:00 groups. Hein Kosters and Chas Gayer led the 4:00 group while Richard Berkenpas and L Hanser topped the 5:00 league. Kopias Cook edged Vane Kiey Van Orechen by two points in a close team battle.
The Hospital Board meets Wednesday at 130 p.m. at the hospital. The Hospital Auxiliary gathers Monday September 16 at 2 30 p.m. in the First Reformed Church basement. The Monday afternoon bowling league will meet September 9 at Valley Lanes at 1 00 p.m. to organize the coming year with league bowling to follow.
Adolph Eshuis, longtime lab and x ray technician at Hegg Memorial Hospital, has been named hospital administrator by the board of directors. A native of Sioux Center, he trained at Harcock County Memorial Hospital in Britt and worked at the Sioux Center hospital for three years before plans were announced to move to Rock Valley with his wife.
Pupil Personnel Services plans school hearing screenings in the first three weeks of the new term for grades one four and eight. An additional refined test will follow for students with suspected loss and parents are notified only if a hearing loss is confirmed. Tests are free and conducted by area speech clinicians Frances Lyle Kir Dennis Hansen John Tayne.
Congressman Mayne Brown will serve as Assistant Minority Leader and parliamentarian in the House of Representatives. Named for the first week of the new session by GOP Leader Gerald Ford, Mayne will alert members to rushed bills and help object to hold votes until debates are clear. He has previously served in this capacity and will be at the Minority Desk in the House Chamber during sessions. During recess he attended the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach and other events in the 6th District, returning after voting in the Tuesday primary at his Sioux City home precinct.
The Rock Valley Commercial Club will hold its regular monthly dinner meeting next Monday evening at 6:00 in the VEW Hall. All members are urged to attend.

A community carnival is scheduled in Inwood on Saturday September from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Main Street Gates. Activities include booths, a fish pond, spook alley, MenOnly, child booths, and a carwash in front of Tawood Hall. Stage shows feature Lyman Piersmit at 7:30, Fotkerts and Popper at 8:30, and the Weavers at 8:30. Proceeds support the swimming pool fund.
Local celebration features Rich Berkenpas and Jim Dirksen in matching outfits representing the south Main Street section. The pair, dubbed the Some Twosome, draw laughs with their coordinated costumes and playful performance during the event.
The American Legion Auxiliary will meet in the W E W Hall on Tuesday September 1st at 2 90 p m.
The primary produced a landslide for Ted Hoagland in the sheriff race with 3858 votes to Darrell Radman 1841. Roetman led Rock Township with 198 to Hoagland 133. Robert Huibregise defeated Gail Klay for county attorney 2825 to 2412, with Roetman winning Rock Township 176 to Huibregise 141. State race favorites carried Rock Valley voters, with Hughes dominating the governor and senate nominations. county totals show 454 to 92 for Hughes and 5400 Republicans to 600 Democrats overall.
A fragmented OCR list shows both Republican and Democratic tickets with candidate names and numbers for United States Senator Governor Lieutenant Governor Secretary of State Auditor Treasurer Agriculture Attorney General and Representatives, plus county and district posts. Numerous garbled spellings and stray numbers obscure proper nouns and jurisdictions.
A reception and tea for Rock Valley Public Schools teachers will be held September 16 at 4 00 p.m. in Elaas Hall. The Rock Valley Womans Club and the Just A Mere Club hostesses invite the public to meet teachers and new staff. Representatives from the clubs are listed as Mrs E R Haas, Mrs John Graves, Mrs Bi Dykstra, Mrs Al Porter, Mrs Connie DeRuyter, and Mrs Bill Miller.
