VEW club offers free Scotchlite bicycle taping Thursday

VEW members express disappointment over low turnout for free Scotchlite bicycle taping at ViP.AW Hall. The safety initiative invites parents to bring youngsters or any rider to the VF W Hall Saturday September 4 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon for free tape application that reflects light at night. If rain occurs the event moves to the rear of the Iowa Public Service building.

Mrs Roskam Slow Recovery After Sioux Falls Hospital Stay

The condition of Mrs Anthony Roskam Sr remains a patient at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls with only slow improvement. Her husband Mr Roskam died Monday Aug 16 from injuries after an auto accident five miles south of Rock Valley on Aug 6. Mail addressed to Mrs Roskam will be received at the hospital on the 3rd Floor West Wing.

Rock Valley annexation expands town south of Highway 18

In a recent Siux Countriet Court decision Rock Valley has annexed land south of Highway 18 extending west to Roorda Machine Shop and east to Kopima Machine Works. The move increases the town population by nearly 100 people from 1,893.

Services held for Lloyd Brown 44 who died after long illness

Lloyd A Brown 44 longtime Inwood resident died Thursday in a Sioux Falls hospital after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held August 28 at Pioneer Methodist church Rock Valley with Rev Mervin Nelson the burial at Richland Cemetery Inwood. He was born February 20 1921 in Inwood and married Lorena Menning November 8 1942 at Sioux Center. He farmed near Inwood after World War II then moved to Rock Valley to work with a breeders association until June this year. He was a member of Golden Sheaf Lodge AF and AM, Masons of Rocky Valley, and the Sioux City consistory. Survivors include his widow two sons Donald in Vietnam Wayne at home three daughters Mary Jo Sylvia Janet all at home his parents Mr and Mrs Raymond Brown Inwood four sisters Gerrit DeVries Fairview SD Herman Heffron Ventura California Bert Coffin LeMars and Dale Skadsen Sioux Falls

Santema Fractures Leg in Horse Fall Near Dron

Greg Santema 13 son of Mr and Mrs John Santema will be operated on today to repair a leg fracture suffered Thursday August 26 when his horse slipped at the Earl Gort farm near Dron. He is in the Methodist hospital in Sioux City after being in traction. The fracture is near the hip.

Beumer Named for Senate Postmaster Approval

Paul E Beumer Rock Valley acting postmaster was among nine Iowans sent to the Senate by President Johnson for approval as permanent postmaster. The list was transmitted Tuesday as part of a broader federal appointments package.

Rock Valley Christian School Sees Enrollment Rise

Rock Valley Christian School reports higher enrollment this year with 292 students in grades kindergarten through eight, up from 274 last year. Four new teachers join the staff including Vivian Bartels of Valley Springs and Geriinde Kooima, Dordt College graduates, along with Winerva De Ruyter and Clarence Ver Steeg bringing teaching experience to the sixth grade.

Hospital committee in Rock Valley aims to raise 400 000 for land building and equipment to create a debt free hospital without government aid. Cost spreads over three years about 400 per family at 4c a day. Volunteers can offer services via a coupon in this issue to support the drive.

Miller boy hurt in home collision

Keith Miller son of Mr and Mrs Donald Miller of Rock Valley was skinned on shin and leg Tuesday when his car collided with a vehicle driven by Mrs Paul Dean in front of the Miller home. He was shaken and bruised but medical exam showed no permanent damage.

Rock Valley Gun Club Labor Day Trophy Shoot Planned

The Rock Valley Gun Club will host its annual Labor Day trophy shoot at the total grounds on Monday with practice sessions before the 11 a.m. program using the Lewis securing system. Rock Valley Community School opened August 30 with 683 students, and the 8th grade vacancy was filled by Nora Viotho of Iretan. No classes on Labor Day as it is a legal holiday.

Timmer wins first as Henderson places third in Luverne shoot

Randy Timmer takes Weyard championship trophy while Ron Henderson finishes third at Luverne Rock County Sportsmen club annual trap shoot. Eighty shooters from sixteen squads competed in the team event with Wyrin Harms George Joe Malone Luverne and Bill Schmidt of Sioux Falls contributing to the winning effort.

Fire at Tem Ver Wey home. origin undetermined

Firefighters responded to a Tem Ver Wey residence on Wednesday forenoon to extinguish a short duration blaze in the kitchen. Clothes hung there caught fire but the cause could not be established and smoke damage was limited. Rock Valley golf hopefuls expect to play on their own course next year as FHA talks progress and a $70,000 van is readied. The course architect Johnson of Sioux City works on greens and fortifies plans for planting while bids are sought for buildings and a caretaker-greenskeeper position is advertised for this fall.

Wayne Groeneweg of Rock Valley is named a Manitoba Master Angler after catching a 19 lb 62 oz northern pike from Lake Vandekerckhove north of Lyna Lake. He earned bronze badge and a special certificate for the trophy catch.
