Fire destroys historic hotel in Le Mars era building
An 1883 hotel in Le Mars known as one of the town’s first and leading inns burned to the ground overnight. Built to serve emigrants and new residents, the building housed a hotel for decades before the blaze, noticed by Mrs Allik from blocks away. The site, once central to local growth, is unlikely to see a new structure soon due to poor location.

Property rights in domestic dogs and Yellowstone bears
C M Young of Des Moines notes dogs without a license may not be owned and cites a Philadelphia ruling. A dog picked up by a man and later returned to its owner faced a quashed larceny charge for lack of property value in an unlicensed dog. Bear encounters in Yellowstone Park alarm visitors as nuisance bears increase in numbers after a feeding incident and an attack on a man left a leg wound.
