Rosa Naegel a Swiss governess aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam from Amsterdam Bologna reportedly grabbed a baby from a deck crowd and threw it into the sea during mid ocean near New York. Police and ship officers halted further harm and searched for the child though the body was not recovered. The mother Mrs Garowski traveling with three children to join her husband in Fargo N D was prostrated by the loss. Naegel a native of Verne Switzerland had worked as a governess for several New York families.
The American Federation of Labor at its Minneapolis convention adopted with one dissenting vote a resolution urging the judiciary committee to report a joint resolution to state legislatures proposing a constitutional amendment granting women the right to vote. The federation also urged applying the Chinese exclusion act to shipping of seamen and cooks aboard vessels under the American flag and pledged to push for laws to curb vessel overloading.
