Miss Van Otterloo and Achterhof United in Sioux Center

Miss Jeanette Van Otterloo of Rock Valley and Lawrence Achterhof of Sioux Center wed at the First Reformed church in Sioux Center last Friday evening with more than five hundred guests. Rev. L A Brunsting officiated as the ceremony followed by an organ prelude, solos, and a brief sermonette. The bride wore white satin, carried a bouquet, and the couple will reside in Sioux Center.

Christian Reform Church Services and Hospital News

The Christian Reformed Church reports services in Holland at 9 30 A M and 2 00 P M with German and American services listed. A visit to Mrs C Dykstra Jr at the hospital notes she is improving and hopes she will be home soon. Dena Yugteveen is expected home from Rochester soon and is progressing well.

Divorce granted in Bremer County Court in Waverly Iowa

Mrs. manda Bhime sought divorce in Bremer county district court at Waverly Iowa. August Bhime sued for divorce on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment. Court awarded Bhime $200 alimony and ordered Mrs Bhime to pay court costs plus Gerrit Koerselman Jr town attorney's fee.

Public School News Notes Highlight Student Achievements

First grade pupils hosted visitors from the second grade while many students earned perfect spelling. Third grade enjoyed a play by the fifth graders about Kentuck, with numerous students achieving perfect spelling. Seventh and eighth grades plan a Junior High declamatory contest with multiple divisions and students studying classic literature.

Wa-tan-ye Club to Host Benefit Card Party

The Wa-tan-ye Club of Rock Falls will hold a benefit card party in St Marys church basement Tuesday evening at 7 o clock. Proceeds will support a milk fund for public school children as the group continues its service in the community.

Pioneer Resident Harmsen Dies After Illness

John Harmsen, longtime Rock Valley resident, died at home on October 24 after a five to six month illness. Born in 1835 in the Netherlands, he came to America at seven and lived in Wisconsin and South Dakota before settling in Rock Valley forty years ago. He married Alice Lijkstra in 1884. they had fourteen children, four of whom preceded him. Survived by his widow and ten children in several states, he was widely respected. Services were held Saturday at the Christian Reformed Church, with burial at Valley View Cemetery.

Dan Jones of the Wales area in Montgomery County Iowa is noted as an amateur baseball player from southwestern Iowa. He played five innings but never crossed home plate and did not score a run in the reported game.

Farmers Favor Corn Hog Program Vote 5 to 1 in Sioux County

Farmers in Sioux County vote 808 to 485 in favor of continuing the Corn-Hog program for 1936. The issue asked if they favored following the 1935 program which expires November 30, 1935. Meetings announced include a Methodist church supper and a church event with planned installation of board members and a family night service.

Rock Valley Boy Receives Milwaukee Line Agent Post

Rock Valley friends of Harold Jacobs learn he becomes permanent agent for the Milwaukee line at Chamberlain South Dakota. He began railroading after local schooling in telegraphy and served as agent at Chancellor and Plankinton before succeeding the late Orville Hopkins at Rock Valley.

First Reformed Church Plans Sunday and Convention

Reverend H J Abarsen announces Sunday services in English morning and Holland afternoon. Beginning November 10 morning service 9 30 and 12 30 for afternoon. Sioux County Sunday School convention held at Pere on Tuesday November 5 at 9 30 A M with Walter Hutton and New York visitors leading sessions and youth rally. Evening addresses by Rev Drakker and Rev Maddaus at 7 45. Delegates from nearby churches expected. Ladies will serve supper at a modest price.

A collie belonging to the Bjustrom family in Algona Iowa saved 4 year old Donald from a violent police dog attack. The stray leaped to defend the boy, driving off the police dog and receiving the family’s decision to keep him.

Salesman Takes Chicken During Farmyard Intrusion

A salesman drove onto the Fred Sorensen farm in Carroll Town and entered the chicken house. He left with a hen under his arm after a scare from Mr. Sorensen, who watched the incident unfold from the porch.
