Recycling and landfills contend for waste fix in Northwest Iowa
Northwest Iowa communities weigh recycling against a sanitary landfill to solve disposal issues. Economic studies show potential profits from a regional recycling plant, but high startup costs and transport hurdles challenge feasibility. Proposals include specialized bag sorting and targeted material markets, with federal grant considerations and varied local examples.

Engineer calls Highway 18 widening a legitimate Rock Valley request
Walter Mortis of the Iowa Highway Commission in Rock Valley labeled the city’s push to widen Highway 18 through town as legitimate and said he would present it to the commission. The latest commission meeting was May 24, unclear if the proposal was raised. Mortis asked city officials to forward three city maps and a formal proposal, vowing to consult after meeting with the commission. Residents pressure over storm sewers in the south Rock Valley housing addition fueled coordination between city and commission on the drainage plan before highway work proceeds.
