Rabies in wild animals poses a serious risk per Dr. John B. Herrick Iowa State University extension veterinarian. Skunks are major carriers but raccoons foxes dogs cats possums and bats also spread the disease. If an animal wanders in daylight becomes unusually friendly or hostile or acts sick do not handle it. Wash wounds, seek a physician, attempt to capture the animal alive for observation, or kill it avoiding head shots and let a veterinarian handle shipment if needed.
