Second Grade To Fifth Grade School Notes and Activities
Readings and projects fill the week as students in multiple grades work on Holland pictures and sandtable canals. Second graders welcome new pupils Jeanette Vande Vegte and Henry Vande Vegte. Spelling Contest Gives County Winner State Chance
Helen Roarda won the Orange City county spelling contest and will represent Lion County in the final state contest in Des Moines on April 26. The winner earns a trip to Washington, D.C. Representatives from all county schools competed and Mary Jelly trained Helen in both years. Trene Roards placed fifth. The high school girls basketball team plans to enter the tournament in MeBIn next Friday and Saturday.

Two men, Joseph Barry and Idling Horst, were killed when a car driven by Orsh failed to notice strong winds and a tieinity ars. The accident occurred last Saturday morning near Cressing. Both men were young and well regarded. further details are unavailable.

Michael Barry Remembered At Farm Funeral In 1905
Michael Barry died Saturday morning June 18 1905 on the family farm after a long life noted for a winning personality and kindness to all living creatures. A requiem mass was held at St Mary's Rock Valley officiated by Rev A J Eres, followed by interment in the cemetery. The funeral drew many friends and relatives honoring his cheerful nature and acts of help to locals and neighbors alike with a long list of mourners from Sheldon Sioux Falls Rock Rapids Harrisburg and nearby towns. Honorary pallbearers included former Inwood high school classmates and active pallbearers listed among community friends.

Early Iowa Settlers and School Ties in Montrose
Iowa historian J. P. Kennedy recalls 100 years ago Berryman Jennings taught at Galland while Dr. Isaac Galland ran a library. Montrose then had about 20 log cabins, the first built around 1790 and an orchard started by 1795. Only Dubuque had prior settlement in Iowa in 1788, with French settlers Dubuque and Tesson holding Spanish grants.

Williams Reception For Rev Foerster Held Tuesday
A large turnout from St. Mary's church gathered in the basement Tuesday evening to welcome the new pastor Rev Father Foerster. The program included a stringed selection, xylophone piece, a reading by Miss Dorothy Luynman, and a humorous short play Three Rogues and a Rascal. Rev Foerster spoke and met parishioners afterward as refreshments were served.

School Election Set for Rock Valley Monday March 10
The Independent School District of Rock Valley will hold a school election Monday March 10 in the Council room. Polls open at 12 noon and close at 7 pm. Two directors and a treasurer will be elected.
