Community Luncheon Program Shines At Guy Cafe

At the Luncheon Club meeting last Thursday at Guy cafe a small attendance failed to dampen enthusiasm for a fine program and ample feast provided by Mr Bastemeyer. Geo Anderson of Inwood spoke on federal farm loans and tax reform advocate Reimers of Rock Rapids discussed tax reduction and school funding, urging income tax and better use of education funds. Harvey Barnard was chosen chairman for the September meeting.

Business places in Rock Valley will be closed all day Tuesday July 4th as has been the longstanding rule. The town follows the traditional observance with closures across shops and offices.

Veterans Carry On at Fort Madison Encampment

The G A R held its annual encampment at Fort Madison with only 60 veterans present, all at least 87 years old. Iowa records show 472 living veterans, 135 mustered out last year, and 20,388 at the 1893 peak. Despite calls to discontinue, leaders vow to continue while any veteran can attend.

Pearl Found In Cedar River Clam By Waverly Man

Lloyd Woodruff of Waverly found a pearl while opening clams from Cedar river. The pearl measured over three sixteenths of an inch and weighed eight grains. A jeweler termed it a perfect specimen, valued at five to ten dollars. Woodruff plans to continue clam digging for the season.

Garden Gardener in Chariton Skips Weeding Secret of Leaves

A grey haired Chariton Iowa gardener runs a large vegetable plot without weeding. She covers planted areas with dead material such as leaves and old grass, letting plants grow through it. The method reduces hoeing and maintains soil nourishment, except sweet corn which she says cannot be grown this way.

Doings of the District Court showcased multiple appointments and orders

Court actions include appointing L O Copes Jr as receiver for land parcels in sections 36 and 35-97-46, with bond $250, to manage estate leases and potential redemption. Receivership powers cover selling other properties for $4,000 with staged payments, and numerous hearings and approvals on estates, guardianships, and executors. Misses Carrie and Emma Dow of Sanborn visited in Rock Valley to take the teachers examination at the high school. Caroline Reiniger and brother Olim of Orange City called on friends here. Ray Ellis bought an Overland touring car and, with Schemmer, went to Sioux Falls. Ellis aims to become an expert driver. N A Fink left for Gettysburg Pa to attend the 50th anniversary reunion of Civil War veterans. he was the only veteran hero in that battle. Rev. John Kuyper of Cleveland Ohio attended his father’s funeral in Sioux Center and then returned home. John Solon of Winifred S D visited relatives. a former local resident. H B Siemousma and S W Vander Woude returned from Chicago after selling cattle at a good price. Ray Kaskie, lately wiring projects in IA IN IL, visited town then left for St Paul. Mrs J J Quinn of Le Mars visited Rock Valley friends. P O McMurray spent time in Pochahontas IA on business then returned to Rock Valley. Mr and Mrs J C Stuckslager arrived from California. he notes northwest Sioux County as rich and prosperous. Barry Postma went to Sioux City to resume mail route duties. Harry enjoys his annual vacation.

Oldest captive carp dies after 26 years in Iowa tank

The oldest captive carp in Iowa died at the Helman farm near McGregor after 26 years in a tank about the size of a bathtub. Placed in 1907, the fish reached 14 inches before death, surviving on scattered grass hay and grain fed by stock drinking from the container.

74 Years On One Farm Between Father And Son

D N Watkins and his son I J Watkins of near Albia Iowa operate the same 200 acre farm where both were born. The elder Watkins was born in a log cabin 74 years ago near the site of the present house which now shelters both families. The house was built 65 years ago and the dairy herd of Holsteins is emphasized in recent years. The golden wedding anniversary was recently celebrated at the home where the couple began married life, though Mr Watkins still works in the fields.

Lloyd Hasley of Searsboro Iowa works his way through Penn College Oskaloosa by tending cows pigs sheep and other stock accepted in payment of tuition. Morning chores fill his schedule before eight o clock classes. His hands on farming aids his agricultural studies as he plans to enter the ministry.

Illegal large dollar sign display shocks Sioux City shop

A Sioux City shop showcased a giant cardboard dollar bill in its storefront along with $1 shirts when federal agents arrived and ordered the sign removed. The display was deemed to violate a section of the criminal code governing U S currency and the matter was halted by Secret Service officials.

Epic Spirit Lake fishing battle ends in aborted catch

Geadinger Iowa fishermen Joe Amdahl and Albert Suss battled a massive Spirit Lake fish for about ninety minutes. A crowded shore watched as the monster leaped repeatedly, with spectators guessing weights around 40 to 50 pounds. The line tangled with another boat’s anchor, and the giant escaped, leaving locals hopeful for similar catches in the future.

Antique Show Showcases Century Old Relics At Rodman

A women’s community club in Rodman Town hosted antique shows with relics on display. Quilts over a century old and pieces like a 200 year old sugar bowl with six teaspoons were shown. Mrs Lil Jeard and Mrs 2 McClelland presented items believed to be very aged. In total 150 articles were exhibited, all of them described as ancient.

Hustling Dog Digs Into Fox Den Near Paullina Iowa

A small fox terrier plunged into a fox den near Paullina Iowa and reemerged with a young fox firmly in its teeth. Wilcoxen hauled the dog back to the surface to prevent the animal from disappearing through the hole. The mother fox escaped as the dog delivered the young fox.

Rock Valley Christian Reformed Service Plans and July Event

The Rock Valley Christian Reformed Church hosts Dutch services at 9:00 and 7:45 PM and American service at 7:45 PM with Rev Cy Migsen of Chicago to lead if God wills.
