Fort Atkinson and Neutral Ground Redoubt Legend
In 1836 a fort named for Brigadier General Henry Atkinson guarded Neutral Ground for the Winnebago tribe. Soldiers protected the settlement from white despoilers, liquor traders were barred, and crops were protected. The site preserves four stone structures and an old chapel, a rare pioneer fort between the Alleghenies and the Rockies in Winneshiek county.
