Donald Westra, a first time racer and 2 yard man at the Saies Barn, drove the old horse Dr Chris in a July 6 charity event at Roole Rapids. He started as a joke but earned $45 from a hastily raised purse as the pack passed him to finish last yet still collect prize money.
Local trapshooting at the grounds last Thursday saw team five lead with three wins and one loss. Teams competed with each shooter aiming at 26 targets per round. Results: Team one lost to team six. team two beat team four. team three fell to team five. Participants include Ron Henderson and Robert Moeller among others.
Father Charles P Borman appointed pastor of Sacred Heart Alvord and St Mary's Doon and superintendent of St Mary's School Larchwood. He succeeds Father Dale Koslers, now superintendent of SE Ramoni night school Fort Dodge. Borman born near Whitlmore, educated at Presentation Academy, Loras College Dubuque, Creighton Omaha, ordained May 1958. Previously served St Mary's Remsen and Sacred Heart Pocahontas. Also includes sports scores and local business report on Bill Anker joining Kosters IGA Rock Valley from Newton with 20 years in groceries and Dutch origin.
The Rock Valley Saddle Club plans a Friday trail ride at Newton Hills with horses loaded at the Sale Barn at 9 00 a m and a 9 30 a m departure. No stallions allowed. The club meets next Friday at 8 00 p m with rain location at Town Hall.
Vince McNamara named Ashton manager of the Farmers Elevator in Ashton with duties starting August 1. He has 14 years with Rock Valley Farmers Co-Operative Elevator and was born in Ireland in 1927. At 17 he joined the English Air Force, later moved to the United States and became a citizen. He is married to Ruth Drinnen of Sioux Falls and they have five children Nancy John Tim Susan and Dave. The family plans to relocate to Ashton by August.
The Rock Valley Bee announces its vacation issue will be printed this weekend at the usual post office mailing time next week. Advertisers should submit next week’s copy by Friday afternoon and locals are asked to share news items earlier. The paper thanks the public for cooperation.
Winifred Jeanette Bay daughter of Mr and Mrs Gene Bay of Rock Valley received her nursing diploma on Sunday June 27 at 3 00 pm. She was among 17 graduates in the class. A reception followed at the annex after exercises at Heelan high school in Sioux City.
The Rock Valley Bee marks its eightieth year of publication in a Thursday issue. The edition details milestones, local happenings, and community notes typical of a long running local newspaper.
About 375 people from the Boyden Hull area registered for municipal pool lessons. Classes run mornings on weekdays through July 17 with Red Cross instruction and lifeguard supervision by Arlyn Van Berkum and others. Rock Valley and Thess area sessions start July 12 19 and run to August 6 with swimming and water basketball options.
Mrs Lawrence Achterhof, president of the Sioux County Tuberculosis and Health Association, announces a contact X-ray program for possible but as yet unknown TB cases. The effort, directed by Mrs Bernice Bergeome, RCN, will screen contacts with tuberculin skin tests and chest X rays. The program is funded from Christmas Seals sales.
Sioux Center edged Rock Valley Rocks 6 to 5 in a Monday nonleague game before a capacity crowd. Ron Jeffer scattered five hits for the win as fireworks followed the game sponsored by the Rocks and Rock Valley Commercial Club. Battery Sioux Center Jaffer and Heifel. Rocks Kruen and Pohlen. Next Rocks game at Colton on July 13, rainout earlier week with Larchwood rescheduled later.
Mr and Mrs Richard Grunewald of Palo Alto along with Mrs Elsa Mae Potts tended minor facial cuts after a collision involving their car and a vehicle driven by Mrs Junior Kooima of Rock Valley. They received first aid from Mrs Potts until highway patrol arrived. their vehicle was briefly repaired and they continued their trip Saturday morning.
Funeral services for Mrs Henry Van De Berg 66 who died Wednesday at Doon were held Friday at 2 pm in the First Reformed church Doon Porter Funeral home in charge. Born August 3 1898 in Orange City she was a member of First Reformed church and Ladies Aid in Doon. Survivors include her widower six sons Andrew Willard David of Colman 8 D Richard and Elmer of Colman Stanley of Sioux Falls a daughter Lillia Van De Berg of Alvord two brothers John Wart Hull of Alton and Hattie Melima of Orange City.
