Fire devastates Spencer business district Saturday

A massive Saturday fire in Spencer destroyed three buildings in one block and two more blocks of business property on the east side. The blaze, started in the Bjornstad Drug Store’s fire works department, spread rapidly as fire units from nearby towns and Des Moines aided. About 36 business places were ruined, dry goods stores all but one, with water shortages hampering suppression.

Take Over Tire Shop By Marzo Kessler And Reuben Klein

Marzo Kessler and Reuben Klein have taken over Rock Valley Tire and Battery Shop and will operate it in the future. They are open for business now and seek patronage. The note praises their hard work and intent to improve the business, with Peace Lutheran Church in Plato Two announcing Sunday school at 9 30 and divine service in English at 10 30.

Doon residents list a busy spell with the House Show in Sions City on Sunday. Rock Rapids shoppers included Andrew Kiorstad and daughter Hazel and Kathryn Moeller on Monday. Mrs. Neil Sculler is recovering from a Saturday operation in Hull hospital. Mrs. H W Stueven returned home Saturday night after treatment in McKennen hospital Sioux Falls. Helen Vogt and Gertrude Heems kirk of Bull visited Monday. Mr and Mrs Hiney Stueven and daughter were visitors near George. Betty Bunge and J Kennedy of Beresford were Doon visitors Sunday. Ladies Aid Society Group No 1 held its annual picnic at Hobo Park last Wednesday. Vernon Decker visited his grandmother in Rock Rapids last week.

Former Rock Valley Man Ivan Bowes Dies in Long Beach

Ivan Bowes 34, formerly of Rock Valley and son of W J Boggess, died in a Long Beach hospital after three months of illness including pleurisy and bronchial pneumonia. Funeral services were held at J J Mattell chapel with pallbearers named. burial followed at Sunnyside Mausoleum. Survivors include his widow Eleanor, sister Edna Palmer of Long Beach, and his parents at 265 Grand Avenue. He served in World War I and was an American Legion member.

Fatal Well Accident Near Rock Valley Claims Worker

A gas incident in a 150 foot well on the C. C. Schaap farm seven miles west and one mile south of Rock Valley ends in the death of Joe Moore, a Sioux Falls laborer. Moore, about 35, was lowered into the new well contracted by Fred Hoffman to secure water during a drought. He called for retrieval as gas overwhelmed him and died before rescue. Moore left behind no wife but relatives in Aberdeen. Undertaker G. Van Nimwegen handled the rites.

Mrs Walter Groenweg Dies After Illness

Mrs Walter Groenweg died Tuesday after several months of illness. She was a daughter of Mr and Mrs Snook of Rock Valley and had lived in the area all her life. She leaves a husband and a family of children. further details were unavailable for this week’s paper.

Amana Colony to Change System Soon

The Amana colony in Iowa County plans to abandon its long standing communistic system and form a kind of stock company. About 1,500 members across seven villages have helped cultivate 26,000 acres and run a woolen mill known for quality. Young people seek modernization of the community.

Mother of four passes after brief illness

Mrs Will Koning aged thirty one died Thursday evening June 20 at her parents home in Rock Valley after a three week illness. She leaves her husband and four children Alice Peter Annie and Johnnie, plus her parents and many siblings. Funeral at Rock Valley Christian Reformed Church with Rev Gritters and Rev Bajema. Burial in Valley View cemetery.

Benson pheasant hatchery yields high success rates near Marshalltown

At the Benson pheasant farm near Marshalltown 1,020 eggs were incubated under light hens bantams and leghorns. After 24 days 875 hatched. Young birds stay in a six by six foot run for four days then move to an alfalfa field fenced to keep birds in and predators out. About 25,444 eggs will be sold this year to state farms and other buyers in multiple states.

Methodist Church Notes Sunday Services and Students Honored

Methodist Community Church notes services as usual next Sunday with Bible school at 10:00 AM and morning service at 11:00 AM featuring soloists Mrs. Jerry Steck and Russell Colvin. Evening service at 7:30 PM includes a forty minute sermon. Junior church participated last Sunday. A list of students passed tests, Lorin and Eimlin Lock among them, with awards for Bible stories and piano preludes.

Miss Elsie Corwin and her brother visited Sioux Falls to see their broker F E Corwin. Marshall A Fink and Sam Bellesfield attended an old soldiers encampment in Cherokee. Mr and Mrs John Blatherwick of Breckenridge Minnesota visited Rock Valley friends Friday to Monday. Mrs W Scharff returned to Steen Minnesota after a visit with her parents, sister Viva Smith joined her. John Akersbergen accepted a position at Spirit Lake with Western Packing as cream receiver and tester. Hazel and Ruth Minard visited Hartley area sisters for a few days. P E O Society held a farewell for Mrs D A McKellar who left for Laverne Minnesota, then Waterville Minnesota. Mrs McKellar received a cut glass comport. John McKellar of Manhattan Kansas stayed with Rock Valley friends. Sioux county prisoners in Orange City jail were from Rock Valley. two held, one released for good behavior. F L Liddy and daughter Mae left Rock Valley for Elkader Iowa after visiting locally. Liddy improved his farm west of town.

Rupert Hughes Visits Keokuk in Memorial Visit

Famous author Rupert Hughes returned to Keokuk to bury his parents Judge and Mrs. F. T. Hughes. The couple were previously interred in California. Hughes plans to erect a monument in the Keokuk cemetery. Felix Heches, an early notable Keokuk lawyer, is noted as Rupert Hughes’ father’s professional peer. Rupert began his literary career in Keokuk after being born in Lancaster, Missouri.

Sheldon Dairy Defeats Rock Valley In Close Tilt 8-6

Friday evening Rock Valley hosted Sheldon Dairy in a tight game that the visitors won 8 to 6. It marked the second near shutout by the Sheldon squad against Rock Valley, who previously lost to Sheldon 11 to 10 a week earlier. Rock Rapids four to six defeat by Rock Valley on Tuesday in a kitten-ball game. Rock Valley lineup change shown. Fred Wiggerman hit a single and a double in five appearances. The score tied 4-4 for three innings as Rock Valley tallied one, three, and two runs in innings one, three, and six respectively. Rock Rapids replied with one in the second and three in the third before fading.
