Desert drilling dreams end in granite and loss
A Mojave oil prospect seeps into a cautionary tale as an eager investor rents a rotary drill, hires a South Dakota veteran, and spends nearly all, only to strike granite instead of oil or water. Desert crowds, weathered by hype, chase the operation, then vanish with losses, while the partners sell equipment to cover debts and return home. The narrative contrasts ambition with hard economics and ends with a community meeting about electric appliances and project progress.
