Livestock Shipments From Rock Valley Station

Weekly report shows 19 carloads of stock shipped from Rock Valley to Sioux City and Chicago. Listed were sheep cattle hogs and wattle with names of shippers including Cleveringh Vander Poel Var Doorn Harmelink Vermulm Walpole Co Cicly Van Eldik Van Ginkle Post and Cecil Smith. Due to hog market congestion the railroad declined more hog cars, and this week Rock Valley received only two hog cars though fifteen were ordered.

Rock Valley Club Endorses Harding Plan For Highways

At a Friday meeting the Rock Valley Town and Country Club endorsed the Governor Harding Plan for a state wide system of hard surfaced highways. The resolution urges county vote on bonds and allowing boards of supervisors to advertise for bids and contract road improvements with state department approval. Bankers of Sioux County Urged to Explain War Emblem Honor

Western Union Slashes Night Telegraph Rates

Telegraph rates fall January first with liberal reductions. Night messages from Rock Valley to California drop to four cents per ten words, versus seventy five cents before. Chicago and Illinois points cut from forty to thirty five cents per ten words or less. Night rate messages become cheaper for shorter texts and Night Letter rates stay the same for longer messages.

Town and Country Club Prepares for 1919 Progress in Rock Valley

Newly elected officers presided at the last Friday meeting and forecast a busy year. Club members advocate hard surfaced roads and a sewer system, with a petition to be circulated January 24. Committees for Finance Municipal Affairs Entertainment Good Roads Farm Farmers Membership Club Rooms Industries Civic Improvement Commerce and Trade Press and Publicity were named for 1919 and will meet Friday to discuss cooperative efforts including the proposed Co Operative Opera House.

Rock Valley High Declamatory Contest Winners Named

Rock Valley High School held its annual declamatory contest with music by the school orchestra and solos by Miss Daniels and Miss Cox. Winners in dramatic and humorous divisions were announced, with Marie Grossenberg first and Evangeline Ward second in drama, and Imella Bowman first in humor.

Standard Form Changes Adopted by Railroads for Reports

Beginning in the new year the Railroad Administration orders all railway lines to adopt new reporting forms and ticket styles. January reports will follow the federal plan, with gradual changes aimed at simplicity and economy in railroad transportation handling.

Increased express rates raise costs across Midwest states

The American Railway Express Companies won approval from the Federal Railway Administration to raise express rates about ten percent starting January 1. The move standardizes interstate rates across states on a zone and square basis, with Iowa seeing the widest change. Notable first class increases include Rock Valley to Chicago from 2.64 to 2.86 per hundred, New York from 4.29 to 4.45, and other cities such as Dubuque Davenport Des Moines Sioux City Sheldon and more adopting higher charges.

Hog Sale Appreciation and Prices Reach Highs in Iowa

Doherty Bros thank local friends for support at January 17 hog sale. Sunny Side Girl top sow sold to Corwin farms at 660, gilt to J. M. Peery at 500, four gilts from the sow brought 1230, and ten head produced 3500. Bee will publish full buyers list next week.

DeBruin traveled to Hawarden at the start of the week to see his son Herman DeBruin who works as a chiropractor there.

Jerry Flynn Dies Suddenly After Stroke in Rock Valley

Jerry Flynn died after a stroke Monday afternoon at about 4:30 in Rock Valley Iowa. He was 56 years old born August 1 1862 in Crawford County Wisconsin and lived in Emmetsburg Estherville and Rock Valley. He leaves wife Katherine Maher five children Mary Katherine Frances died young two sisters and a brother. Funeral services were held at St Marys Church and burial followed at St Marys Cemetery with many friends in attendance.
