Recalling Steamboat Days on the Des Moines River
W. W. Baldwin of Evanston Illinois, longtime Burlington resident and head of the C B Q railway, recalls barefoot boyhood along the Des Moines riverfront at Keosaqua Iowa during the steamboat era. He mentions boats such as the Time and Tide Morgan Julia Dean Entireprise Alice and notes seven steamers at Neosauqua landing, and says after the 1866 Des Moines valley Railroad line into Des Moines regular rail service began and no steamboat has since navigated the river.

Cow Testing Association Organized in Orange City Area
Ten farmers gathered near the County Agent’s office on Saturday January 12 to form a cow testing association. H. Searle was elected president and I. J. Cooper secretary of the temporary group, which will run until full membership is enrolled and permanent officers are chosen. About 20 members reportedly agreed to join. A county Extension Service specialist will assist in completing the organization, with plans to establish chapters in the county’s north and east parts. Those wishing to enroll their herd should contact the County Agent at Orange City promptly.
