Golden Phantoms and Lost Mines of the Southwest
A late 19th century tale describes White, a prospector near Amarillo, Texas, who found a cement-like ore rich in gold yet vanished with his horse, leaving others to chase rumors toward New Mexico. A separate Arizona tale follows a California party lured by a Yuma captive to the Gila headwaters, where settlers perished and only Adams survived after learning of a possible thousand-dollar-a-day gold wash, a secret that remains lost.
