Lt Gerald Vink Tops Air Force Pilot Training Honors
Lt Gerald Vink son of Mr and Mrs Albert Vink graduated with high honors from Air Force Undergraduate Pilot Training at Vance AFB Enid Ohio. He received the Silver Wings and Commanders Trophy as top overall trainee, after earlier wins in formation and instrument flying and the outstanding student award. His father and brother attended. He hails from Rock Valley High School and studied at Central College Pella and Mankato State Minnesota before enlisting. His next assignment includes survival school at Fairchild AFB Washington and further training at Keesler AFB Mississippi.

Medias Maj Randall Renken, an LeMars native and 17 year air force veteran, earned seven medals for gallantry while piloting an F105 Thunderchief from a Royal Thai Air Force base in Thailand. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel.
Weed and Insect Clinics Planned in Northwest Iowa
Two weed and insect clinics will be led by Dutch Sylvester Harold Gunderson and a specialist from Iowa State University at Estelle January 11 and Sheldon January 12. Sessions run 1 36 to 3 30 p.m. Maurice Eldridge says the latest weed and insect control methods will be shared. Attendees should join one of these meetings for current guidance as this winter is the only Northwest Iowa stop for Sylvester and Gunderson.

Postal Increases Take Effect Sunday January 7
Rock Valley post master Paul Beamer announced new postage rates will go into effect January 7 across all classes except parcel post and international mail. First class rises to six cents, air mail to ten cents, with further increases for third and second class mail and other categories. Customers are advised to contact the post office with questions. some services remain unchanged.

The Iowa Elks Association co sponsors the first Craft Sales Van for the Easter Seal Society of Crippled Children and Adults of Iowa Inc The van will collect items made by orthopedically handicapped clients trained at Camp Sunnyside and sell them at safes booths and county fairs across Iowa Proceeds go to the clients and aims to keep them active and integrated into society.
