USDA forecasts a 4.56 billion bushel U S corn crop with 81.6 bushels per acre, a new national yield record led by Iowa State's Bob Wisner. While increases in other feed grains are noted, a large crop and carryover could strain storage and push prices near loan rates in coming months.
The Rock Valley Improvement Council met at the Red Rock Inn with four members present. They discussed buying site for a new post office, future bids, Welcome Wagon project, and outreach for the September annual meeting.
The Rock Valley Golf Club schedules its first annual club tournament for September 7 and 8. The Championship flight offers 27 holes of medal play with entry $3. Other flights use league averages for qualification and carry $2 entries. Non-league members submit two ring hole qualifying rounds prior to the event. Participants should submit the registration coupon at Pember's Drug.
West Lyon, led by coach Jerry Lenguadora, clinched the Siouxland Conference baseball crown for a third straight year despite early losses to Sioux Center and George and a season finale defeat to Boyden-Hull. Final standings show West Lyon atop a tight pack with Sioux Center, Maurice-Orange City, and George near the top.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Beck will visit Rock Valley on Tuesday August 27. The Centerville publisher will meet local citizens on Main Street during his visit and speak about his campaign.
Maurice Van Voorst Sr owner of Van's Qata Electric Service is featured. Born April 1 1921 in Sioux Center he served three years in the Navy as Parachute Rigger First Class. He later ran a garage and auto electronics business in Rock Valley Rock Rapids and other towns and sits on the Rock Valley First Reformed Church deacon and city council. He is married to Lucy Bleeker and has two children Carol Jean and Maurice Jr.
Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation township committeemen will be elected at 8 10 p m on September 17 at public meetings. John B Draager, Chairman, said five neighbors from each township will be nominated to serve as committeemen with a chairman, vice chairman, regular member and two alternates. Nominations by secret ballot and voting by secret ballot. Ties settled by lot. The ASC system backs farm programs including conservation and price support. Last year about 1700 farmers participated. Voter lists are available in the County ASC office and any eligible resident may vote or hold office regardless of race.
The Gray County Fair Association Spencer Iowa offers free admission for handicapped children on Monday September 9 with one accompanying adult admitted free. Free car stickers will allow parking near the grandstand where accessible platforms are set up. The Clay County Fair Board plans an afternoon of royal entertainment for disabled youngsters from Northwest Iowa. Tickets available by writing Easter Seal Society of Iowa Des Moines IA 50333.
Rock Valley Christian School announces opening exercises on Wednesday August 28 with student registration on August 26 and 27 at 7 30 PM. Projected enrollment for grades 3 K-8 is about 380 with fifteen instructors. Alvin Vande Griend arrives as principal after seven years in Minnesota education and recent MA work.
The Rock Valley Community School will open Monday August 26 at 4 90 am with a welcome address by Van Beek, board president. The first day includes a short program in the old gym and a Labor Day no school on September 2.

The Rock Valley Bee announces a special next week to advertise the Commercial Club's Ridiculous Day on Friday August 30. Sample copies will reach Sioux Center Fairview Hudson Alvord Doon Inwood Hull and Rock Valley routes and ads should be submitted early for the extra edition. A Bee representative will visit businesses Friday for coordination.
A rural North of Highway 18 seat on the school board is up for election this year. The nine Sept election will have nomination papers due 10 days before the election. The post is currently held by Judson Smith since 1956, who plans to run for another three year term.
Merlyn Rehde chair of the Sioux County Republican Party announced the winners of the American Legion flag giveaway at the Your Yair and Family Fun Garni val. Winners include Arkin Vander Wilt Harpers Arthur Stateton Don Dylser and Phil en Herder of Sioux Center. Emphysema attacks 50 percent of adult males per the Veterans Administration.
