Secretary of the Treasury Shaw urged an elastic currency at the Ohio Bankers Association convention. He warned nonelasticity hampers seasonal needs and discussed remedies, favoring expanded national bank circulation and an emergency provision to inject currency without creating new money.
Peoria Woodmen aim to initiate at least 300 candidates at a November conclave in the Coliseum with 160 prospects already secured. The event coincides with the next head camp meeting in Peoria and will involve all city lodges. George W. Reiley, supreme director from Illinois, is expected to attend with other supreme officers.
New York reports securities totaling 36000 were stolen from a Wall Street office yesterday. The loss maker or firm name was not disclosed. The transfer of the securities has been halted.
Port Said reports the steamer Chatham wreck sunk September 6 to avert dynamite explosion was blown up this morning. The blast created a tremendous water upheaval visible five miles away. Authorities believe the dangerous cargo is destroyed and canal damage is under study. Officials expect debris clearance in four days with no serious canal damage.
New York on September 28 reports members of the grain product exchange discussing higher commission rates for grain trades. A doubling of current charges is seen as boosting business and profits. Presently non-member fees are 12.50 per 10,000 bushels and 6.50 for members. Proposed levels would be 25 per 1,000 bushels for non-members and 131 per 10,000 for members.
Rochester N Y Sept 28 The German Evangelical Synod has elected members to both home and foreign missionary boards. Names on the foreign board include Rev W Banrendt Cleveland Rev E Schmidt Elmira Rev Paul Meigel Washington Rev I C Buckish New York and Rev J F W Helmkamp Rochester The home board lists Rev John Baltzer St Louis Rev William Hackmann Kansas City Rev F Reller Evansville Ind Rev J Neusch Keokuk Iowa and Rev A Gherke Detroit.
The Trinidad Steamship line steamer Grenada misread signals and struck a pier at near full speed in New York. The collision damaged the pier and injured several longshoremen, five of whom required hospital care for serious injuries.
Rome reports Pietra Calcndia mountain, about 200 meters high, split in two after earthquake shocks. The split threatens to bury Ajelo as inhabitants flee. Nearby Spanarise cyclone damages houses and causes injuries and fatalities in Caserta province.
The new chicken farm of J M Couch on Twenty Fifth Street overlooking Ninth Avenue was sold yesterday to F A Bennett who will take over the property and operate the business He plans to rebuild the house destroyed by fire and Couch retires His future plans are undecided Bennett came from the east and worked as a harness maker at the Rock Island arsenal He has sold his home at 1454 Fifteenth Street to C B Sears of Chicago. Two cholera cases reported in Berlin with no deaths.

The Star faced suits from Arthur Keithley and State Senator Putnam over articles accusing them of misdeeds and seeking damages. Witte arrival in St. Petersburg drew large crowds and a warm reception with formal addresses praising his service.

New Orleans on September 28 reports six new yellow fever cases and two deaths. The tally adds to the ongoing urban health crisis as officials trace sources and urge precautions. Public health workers intensify surveillance and patient isolation to stem spread.
Detroit, Sept 28. In defense of his 16 year old invalid daughter, William R Harrington beat Charles Marten with a baseball bat, killing him, and severely injuring Ernest Bloom in a melee at his residence. Marten had allegedly attacked the girl after drinking.
New York, Sept. 28. George W. Perkins, vice president of New York Life Insurance, balked at producing Morgan & Co. books for the legislative committee, offering copies instead. He testified purchasing $4,000 of Big Four bonds from Morgan & Co. at $40,000 below the Life Finance Committee’s price.

Highlights include 3898 conversions and 4412 additions from revival meetings across 133 churches. 8 new buildings costing 62500 and 66 house repairs totaling 77951. San Francisco news from the S. N. Castle reports 30 Japanese fishermen killed by natives at Upika on the Kamobalka peninsula. A second group of 10 men would have faced the same fate but escaped to the steamer. The Castle lay anchored near the settlement to receive the news.
