State militia is now on guard at Shenandoah as orders are restored at the mines but one person is reported ill or injured, according to local dispatches.
In Shenandoah Pennsylvania last night a shooting killed one man, with a girl named Annie Rogers recovering. Martial law closed saloons and all regional ironworks as about 2,900 soldiers arrived, led by Lieut. Gov. Gobins, to quell rioting amid a struck region while authorities ordered curfews and prepared for further action.
Across the Lehigh Valley area a mob attacked miners returning from work as revolvers fired and bricks flew. Injured were Edward Coyle Michael Scanlan John Wusdickey and others with serious and minor wounds. Sheriff Toole dispatched twenty deputies to disperse the mob and restore order at the Indian Ridge colliery. Mitchell issued an open letter urging arbitration and coal operators and unions to meet while railways resist high freight charges.
Washington reports that the United States has given full replies to powers about the Chinese trouble and disclosed its purposes. The state department refused to reveal details, noting a cabinet meeting and discussions with foreign envoys before sending cable summaries to Berlin Paris and London.
Houston reports ten thousand destitute in Brazoria County. N Mills cites dire need for shingles nails lumber and cash to prevent families from abandoning homes. London dispatch from Roberts at Pretoria reports Methuen completely routed the Boer convoy west of Klerksdorp and recaptured the 15 pounder at Colenso. He seized 26 wagons, 000 cattle, 4 000 sheep, 2 000 rounds of ammunition and 28 prisoners. Hold yard at Vryheid occupied on the 19th, Boers expelled from a strong position. British casualties were few.
Chicago reports W. D. Dunton, whose alleged extravagance linked to the death of George S. Forbes, a First National Bank teller, was captured at Old Point Comfort. He is to be returned to the city.
London dispatch notes James Corbett intends to return to the United States to pursue reunion with his wife amid a controversy over alleged intimate acquaintances who have misled him. He says he will address the matter personally and cites reasons for his European sojourn and pending separation.
Colored residents celebrated Emancipation Day with a Fifth Avenue picnic at Huber's garden. Speakers included Mayor McCono hie, S R Kenworthy, H A Weld, EM Sharron, and Dr Ransen. Lena Jackson read the declaration of independence and Lizzie Wilson read the emancipation proclamation. Officers listed. festivities to continue with dancing and general good time.
A masked robber in Spokane attempted a lone hold up of a westbound Northern Pacific train near Athol Sisbo at 1 am, firing shots to terrorize passengers and stealing valuables before escaping. In Lincoln Nebraska four masked men halted a Burlington train at Woodlawn Gate, robbing the passengers of a small sum and fleeing after damaging the through safe.
Springfield Sept 22 Former Vice President Stevenson and General John Black visited a family in mourning as honorary pallbearers were named. A federal suit filed by L B Stephenson alleges Will Krum and T J Vekete fraudulently controlled a St Louis turnpike company and East St Louis bank with Bain removing records. An injunction seeks to halt voting of 270 shares and recover shares bought by Bain and spouse. Russell Sage referenced amid juror bias questions in Lloyd J. Smith case as Sage acknowledged knowledge could bias deliberations. Various church, civic, and Masonic events noted, including Abbott family issues and local society meetings.
