Havana reports a widening gulf between the Cuban government and insurgents signaling inevitable US intervention. Taft remains noncommittal while advising patience as naval forces strengthen, and talks with Roosevelt continue amid renewed calls for decisive action and possible reconcentration policy.
At Cut Bank Montana last night a rear end freight crash killed two stock men, Roadmaster Dinton, and Brakeman Critchell. The crash also involved a work train that struck a sleeper at Pulaski Wisconsin leaving two dead and fourteen injured.
Brigadier Generals Thomas H. Barry and W. H. Duvall, fresh from Germany where they attended maneuvers, aim to sail home by Sept. 29. They seek passage on a liner departing Sept. 22, leaving families behind, as they hurry their departure. Sir Thomas Lipton sails from Liverpool to New York aboard the Celtic. Barry and Duvall plan to depart Antwerp on Sept. 22 aboard the Zealand, illustrating the urgency of their return.
Four bids were received by the Isthmian Canal Commission for supplying Chinese laborers for Panama Canal construction. Laborers priced 10 to 13 cents an hour, foremen 15 to 40 cents, cooks 13 to 30 cents, barbers 12.5 to 30 cents, interpreters 15 to 60 cents, doctors 25 to 60 cents. Bonds of 50000 required. work within three and a half months. no contract let until review by commission.
The steamer H. B. Tuttle sprang a leak off Cedar Point and was towed to Sandusky, where early today it broke in two at the stern and became a total wreck. The crew escaped in lifeboats.
A blaze in Tacoma Washington destroyed two livery stables housing 182 horses a restaurant the Tacoma Eastern passenger depot and a long viaduct. One woman died and a man was missing with losses estimated at 150000 dollars.
An allied democratic address in New York urges a straight democratic ticket for Buffalo convention to oppose the Hearst led Independence League endorsing Congressman William Sulzer. Signers include The National Democratic Club, Jefferson League, American Anti-Trust League, Bryan Democratic League and Federation of Workingmen. Mayor McClellan to attend, backing Sulzer.
Pekin reports that a newly issued edict follows the united recommendations of Chinese commissioners who toured the United States and Europe. The order bars the use of opium, both foreign and native, within ten years.
Missouri court acquits Rex Smith and James E. Smith on peonage charges. Judge Pollock directs jury to convict the remaining seven defendants if evidence shows conspiracy to deprive 40 Negroes of rights. Trial held in Cape Girardeau on September 21.
Danbury Connecticut case where 18 year old Peter Zarcone was fined ten dollars and costs after shooting a snake on Sunday. Police arrested him under state blue laws that prohibit carrying a firearm in the open on Sunday and selling or buying snakebite antidote, with the judge noting self defense but upholding the Sunday prohibition.

St Paul Sept 21 A W Trenholm general manager of the Chicago St Paul Minneapolis and Omaha railroad testified before the Minnesota railroad and warehouse commission that his company used money for political purposes. He admitted paying expenses linked to anti La Follette activity and to support a Wisconsin election effort. The hearing broke up after the examiner pressed for records of payments.
Hongkong reports the typhoon has wiped out the entire fleet of 600 fishing junks, raising death toll to 10,000. Extradition papers granted for Paul O. Stensland as he travels from Tangier toward America. Dr. Lapponi, pope’s physician, returns to Rome gravely ill. Queen of Spain reportedly in an interesting condition. Oscar T. Chicago Sept 21 The corner stone of Chicago’s new county building at Clark and Randolph was laid in a ceremony claiming it will be the world’s largest courthouse. Vice President Fairbanks spoke. Governor Deneen Mayor Dunne and Cook County Board President Brundage attended. A military parade preceded a banquet in the evening with Fairbanks as guest of honor.
Secretary Root and party arrived aboard the U S cruiser Charleston and were greeted by Governor Magoon and canal officials in Panama The Associated Press elected a new board of directors with General Charles K Taylor of the Boston Globe as a new member and named officers including Melville E Stone as Secretary and Charles S Diehl as Assistant Secretary
