In a furious southwest gale on Lake Superior the steamer Parker, laden with iron ore, foundered four miles north of Grand Marais. The Grand Marais life-saving crew saved all eighteen crew members after a three hour struggle. Two tugs towed the surfboat and brought exhausted men to port. Parker was bound from Superior to Cleveland, 246 feet long, 38 feet beam, 1,460 tons, worth about $45,000 with cargo $10,000.
