William Bryan arrived in Baltimore after visiting Deer Park and Annapolis. He urged Taft to define his stand on issues, arguing Roosevelt's endorsement alone does not prove Taft can govern. In Brookshire Texas Sept 14 Dave Newton a Black man accused in the case of John Buchtrin a White man fatally struck at his home near here Saturday was taken from jail by a mob and died in a related incident. The father and brother of Newton were jailed in Hempstead to prevent further violence as tension runs high and Black residents are ordered to leave the community.
Adjutant General Scott issued an order for an election to fill the major's post in the 6th Infantry in Chicago at 1 p m Thursday October 8 with Colonel W T Channon presiding. Major Reig of Geneseo seeks reelection.
In Paris on September 14 the Franco-Spanish note on recognizing Mulai Hafid as Sultan of Morocco was transmitted to the powers signatory to the Algeciras convention. In Cincinnati on September 14 Judge Taft turns 51 tomorrow amid widespread congratulatory notices.
A Chicago suburban train rear ended a Lake Shore excursion train at Chesterton Indiana wrecking scene at midnight. One woman killed instantly, five seriously injured and 28 others hurt. Most injured from Indianapolis. Mercy hospital received the wounded. A separate Erie train wreck at Geneva Pennsylvania injured 34 with 23 taken to Spencer hospital. Italians and Greeks among the injured.
Springfield man Fred Peterson aged 45 died from carbolic acid poisoning after being bitten by a mad squirrel that attacked several downtown last week. Police report he feared rabies and reportedly chose to end his life rather than endure hydrophobia. Others bitten are in Chicago receiving treatment to prevent serious developments.
Philadelphia left fielder Sherwood Magee leaped from the third story of his hotel after a fit caused by indigestion. He sustained severe leg injuries and will be unable to play for some time. The incident occurred in Philadelphia on September 14.
Springfield Sept 14 The trial of Joe James was commenced in the Sangamon circuit court today. He is charged with the murder of Clergy A Ballard a railway conductor. The tragedy occurred in front of Ballard s home on the night of July 5. The negro entered Ballard s house and was discovered by Ballard s daughter sitting on the foot of her bed. Ballard pursued him and the negro stabbed Ballard to death.
Fire swept Keosauqua Iowa damaging the business district including the Manning bank and the Strickland and Davidson buildings. The blaze caused an estimated loss of 50000 dollars.
Washington Sept 14 The commission on country life appointed by President Roosevelt will hold its first meeting probably within a week in this city Professor L H Bailey now accepts the chairmanship The group believes rural institutions and social affairs have not kept pace with national development and will focus on securing agricultural interests a proper share of public attention.
A violent clash disrupted yesterday's Catholic procession near Westminster Cathedral as crowds surged along narrow streets. Police fought to create space while hoots and yells greeted the advancing guard as women cried and children watched from upper windows. Prime Minister Asquith's intervention reportedly preserved the procession's central feature and prevented a catastrophe.

The Tri-City School Masters' club met at the Manufacturers' hotel in Moline and elected officers for the ensuing year. H. B. Hayden of Rock Island was chosen president, F. L. Smart of Davenport secretary, and B. B. Jackson of Moline treasurer. About forty teachers attended the banquet after the meeting. Rev. Paul Brown of Moline spoke at the event.
Angered by ejection from a Rock Island train two tramps attempted to wreck the Wilton accommodation near Muscatine Iowa. They placed ties on a curve to lift the engine but the engineer, using full power, shifted the obstruction aside and remained on the rails. The suspects Smith and Wilson were captured at Wilton.
K Thaw was moved from Duchess county jail to Westchester county jail today under Sheriff Lane and Under Sheriff Townsend custody. The transfer places Thaw under Westchester jurisdiction for future custody and residence.
