A Galveston message dated Sept 11 signed by Mayor Walter C Jones says 5000 people have died in the city and about one third of the residential area swept away. Thousands are homeless and destitute, and the city appeals for immediate aid. A second note from Alvin dated Sept 10 says Alvin and the surrounding area are absolutely devastated with around 2000 homeless residents.

Denver Sept 12. The Burlington Overland Flyer was halted by a lone highwayman at 2 AM five miles east of Haighler Nebraska. He secured 500 dollars in cash and many diamonds and watches before escaping. He entered through the sleepers but did not molest other cars.
In Denver on September 12 fusion dominated the Democratic Silver Republican and Populist state conventions. Delegates formed committees to divide offices and draft sympathy resolutions for Texas disaster victims. Governor Thomas attacked Senator Wolcott as the fusion row heated, while Barker pursued talks to unite the Populists. A Galveston fund relief drive raised money as the platforms backed silver, eight hour workday, and fusion of silver factions.
Indianapolis Sept 12 John Mitchell president of the United Mine Workers says the strike will be declared this afternoon or evening. He states miners seek only remedies for dockage wages and the truck store, plus the right to choose their own doctor, and that all workers will go out unless the operators concede.
Saratoga Sept 12 The Democratic state convention endorsed Bryan and the national platform denouncing trusts especially the ice trust. Bird S Coler and John B Stanchfield were nominated for governor. The report notes Bryan’s stance on terms and renomination. Watertown Wis Sept 12 Johnny A Alyward of Madison was nominated for congress on the 22nd ballot by the Second district Democratic convention.
St Joseph Michigan reports the steamer Lawrence of Peoples Transit given up for lost with 50 aboard after a wreck near the port. Reports from Cleveland and Milwaukee cite arrivals and delays from the big West Indian storm with heavy seas and widespread rainfall across Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Chicago Sept 12 A fire in a two story frame tenement at 205 Desplaines street early yesterday morning caused the deaths of two Pullen family members and serious injuries to five others. Edward Pullen six years old and James Pullen forty years old died or were severely burned. Mrs Annie Pullen, Josie Pullen seven, and Harry Woodlock three were injured. The Woodlocks leapt from a window as the harness shop burned. Fire brigades arrived quickly and battled the blaze, with several residents escaping.
Washington Sept 12 The War Department received from US Army Officer Reichman who aided the Boers as observer a report stating missions ended and requests for instruction. Interpreted as implying collapse of Boer resistance to England Kruger at Lorenzo Marques arrives in Transvaal and Kruger reaches Lorenzo Marques.
