Planing mill and yards burned last night, but sash and door works will soon run again. Estimated total losses reach 551,200, fully insured. Indications point to coal dust explosion in shed as the fire starter.
A coal dust explosion caused a large fire injuring three. The Sash and Door works, Rock Island Lumber & Manufacturing, and nearby rails and telegraph lines suffered extensive damage across about ten acres. Insurance covers most losses. Sash and Door will resume next week and likely rebuild, except the sawmill. lumber sheds to be rebuilt as well.
A major blaze at the Rock Island Sash and Doorworks caused estimated losses near 550000 and disrupted rail traffic. The main factory sustained fire and water damage, but plans to resume operations within a week or ten days were announced by P. W. Strickland and T. A. Herzog, with about 350 workers affected. Insurance coverage and damages to adjacent structures and coal sheds are detailed, including impact on the Rock Island and Burlington lines and related facilities.
